<p>幼少時より姉のメアリーと共にプロテスタントの教育を受けていたアンは、同じくプロテスタント国デンマークの王子ジョージとの婚姻や他のプロテスタント各国との協調関係の構築によって、フランスを始めとするカトリック諸国との対立構造をより明確化し、英国の優位を強く印象付けます。</p>\r\n

<h3>ステュアート朝最後の女王</h3>\r\n
<p>女王の治世最大の功績として歴史的にも高い評価を受ける<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">1707年のスコットランドとのグレートブリテン連合王国の樹立</strong>は、ジェームズ1世の治世以降英国の悲願であった二大国家の統一を実現したばかりか、ヨーロッパにおけるイングランドの権勢を一層強化します。これはイングランド王国の実質的なスコットランド併合であり、スコットランドは長老派教会主義や独自の立法、また裁判制度などを保ち続けていたものの、政治的、経済的にはイングランドに従属することになり、<strong>イングランドの外政上の勝利</strong>となります。</p>\r\n
<p>国政に関しては成功を収めたアン女王ですが、私生活においては<strong>後継者問題</strong>に翻弄され、17回の妊娠を経て死産や流産を繰り返し、継嗣を残すことが出来ませんでした。しかし、前述の王位継承法が功を奏し、ジェームズ1世直系の孫でドイツのハノーファー選帝侯妃であったゾフィーの息子ゲオルク・ルートヴィヒが50人以上に上る王位継承権保持者を退けて英国王位を継承し、<strong>イングランドのハノーヴァー朝の創設</strong>を実現します。1701年制定の王位継承法が基本的にはその後の円滑な王位継承を可能とし、<strong>現ウィンザー朝が血統上ハノヴァー朝の直系</strong>であることから、アン女王の崩御によるステュアート朝の断絶と、それがもたらした結果を肯定的に捉える解釈が今日主流になりつつあります。</p>\r\n

<p>裏面には有名な<strong>十字型の有冠の紋章</strong>が厳かに刻まれ、新しく発足したグレートブリテン王国の国家の威厳を最大限表出しています。この紋章が最初に英国貨幣界に登場したのは王政復古を成就した<strong>チャールズ2世の治世初期</strong>のことで、それ以降約150年以上にわたって歴代英国君主のためのコインの裏面を装飾します。イングランドを始めとする<strong>4か国の国章</strong>をバランスよく配置し、4種の盾の紋章を一つに組み合わせて完璧な十字を形成しています。</p>\r\n

<p>その中央に掲げられているのは、14世紀にさかのぼる旧い来歴を持つ英国王室が授与する栄典の最高位<strong>「ガーター勲章」</strong>の徽章です。中世英国史を代表する名君エドワード3世によって制定されたこの勲章は、現在も<strong>各国を代表する高位王族を中心に授与され</strong>、英国王室の永遠の象徴として存続しています。5世紀後半から6世紀にかけて実在したブリトン人の君主アーサー王の物語に端を発するガーター勲章ですが、王と共に円卓を囲むことを許可された騎士たちの故事に由来する<strong>ガーター騎士団</strong>と称する排他的な会員組織を発端として誕生したと伝えられています。英国王室史上の至宝とされる同勲章の徽章を中央に刻むこの十字型の紋章は、アン女王の治世を代表する当コイン裏面のデザインに相応しい図案で、リリース以降多少のバリエーションを生み出したものの、その後もヴィクトリア時代までの長きにわたって英国貨幣の裏面を華麗に装飾していました。</p>\r\n
