<p>1727年、国王ジョージ1世の崩御に際して新英国王として即位した長男のゲオルク・アウグストことジョージ2世（在位：1727-1760）。その33年間の治世下にイギリスの内閣制は完成の域に達し、君主は「君臨すれども統治せず」の原則の下に立憲君主制は強化されるに至りました。父ジョージ1世に続いてドイツ出身にして最後のイギリス国王となったジョージ2世。父王よりは英語は話せたものの、同様にイギリスの政治に対する関心が薄く、父王の時代に続いて名宰相ウォルポールに政務を任せ、自身は狩猟に興じるなど悠々自適の生活を送っていました。ウィリアム3世の治世後期に制定された1701年王位継承法とアン女王の時代の1707合同法によって、イギリス王位継承者がプロテスタントに限定されたため、元々継承順位が50番以下であった祖母のゾフィー・フォン・デア・プファルツは一気に継承順位第2位に上昇しました。1714年にゾフィーとアンが相次いで亡くなり、父のハノーファー選帝侯ゲオルク1世ルートヴィヒがイギリス王位を継承し、ジョージ1世となります。1727年にジョージ2世が即位した当初、イギリスの内政はグレートブリテン議会によって運営され、国王が干渉することは殆どありませんでした。父王と同じく、ハノーファー選帝侯を兼任していたジョージ2世は、その在位期間中に12回帰省し、そこから政府の施策を直接指示したと言われています。ジョージ2世の治世下に勃発したオーストリア継承戦争中の1743年には王自らデッティンゲンの戦いに参加し、戦闘に参加した最後のイギリス国王として歴史上にその名を刻むこととなります。国王が1760年に崩御してから約2世紀の間、歴史家たちによって伝えられたジョージ2世像は極めて歪曲したものであり、王の実在の姿を想起させるには不十分なものであったというのが現代共通の見解です。しかし、その後は再評価の気運が高まりを見せ、とりわけ生前の王の外交政策における積極性や軍人の任命に対する先見の明が高く評価されるようになりました。ジョージ2世が後世に及ぼした影響力の大きさは意外と知られていないかもしれません。大英博物館が設立された4年後の1757年には、王立図書館の蔵書を寄贈したり、1737年にはハノーファー選帝侯領内初の大学であるゲオルク・アウグスト大学ゲッティンゲンを創設し、王自らが同大学を訪問した記録が残っています。また1716年から1727年までダブリンのトリニティ・カレッジの学長を務め、1754年には後のコロンビア大学の前身であるニューヨーク市のキングス・カレッジを設立するなど、学術面での功績は数えきれません。</p>\r\n

<h2>ジョージ2世妃キャロラインの戴冠式を恒久化する18世紀初頭銀メダルの秀作</h2>\r\n

<p>今回ご紹介させていただく作品は、18世紀のイギリスに33年間君臨したジョージ2世の妃であったキャロライン王妃の戴冠式の折に記念品として発行された銀メダルです。ジョージ1世が不幸な結婚をしたため、ジョージ2世の場合は結婚が正式に決定される前に将来の王妃との対面を果たしていたと言われています。1709年9月2日にキャロラインは選帝侯家のお膝元であるハノーファーに到着し、その日の晩に二人の結婚式が執り行われました。1727年6月22日にロンドンのウェストミンスター寺院にて挙行されたジョージ2世の戴冠式ですが、同日にキャロライン王妃の戴冠式も執り行われました。数々の伝説で彩られているジョージ2世の戴冠式ですが、新国王と同郷出身で、当時イギリスに帰化していた大作曲家ゲオルク・フリードリッヒ・ヘンデルが作曲した「聖人ザドック」を始めとする「戴冠式アンセム」が演奏されたのもこの日のことでした。ウェストミンスター寺院の高い天井に響き渡るイギリス王室の権威を象徴する音楽の下に、イギリスの王妃となったキャロライン。当メダル表面には在りし日の英国王妃の気品を伝える立体性に富んだ肖像が掲げられており、コイン・メダル・コレクターのみならず観る者全てにメダル芸術の粋を堪能させる高い出来栄えを誇ります。穏やかな眼差しと豊かなうねりを見せる頭髪を特徴とするこの左向きの肖像は、コイン上には見られない種類のものであり、メダルというジャンルならではの重厚感が肖像の存在感を圧倒的に引き立てています。「神の恩寵によるキャロライン・グレートブリテン、フランス、およびアイルランド女王」と読むことのできる定型の碑文が肖像の周囲を格調高く彩っています。メダルの裏面中央には王妃自身の立像が描かれており、左に宗教の守護者、右にユニオンジャックの盾を掲げる女神ブリタニアが描かれている劇的な一場面が見られ、王妃の戴冠式に祝意を捧げています。ハノーファー朝の初期を代表する正真正銘のアンティークメダルならではの劇的な表現力が魅力の当メダルは、歴史的事象としてのキャロライン王妃の戴冠式の挙行をメダル上にて恒久化する重要な役割を果たすものです。</p>
