<p>当コインが発行された17世紀は、英国のその後の命運を左右する未曾有の一年でした。1642年、王党派と議会派の対立は遂に武力衝突に発展し、清教徒革命が勃発します。急進的な議会の独立派に属するオリバー・クロムウェルが議会軍を率いて鉄騎隊を編成し、軍事力の中心として引き起こした内乱がその始まりです。1644年のマーストン・ムーアの戦い、そして続く1645年のネーズビーの戦いにおいて決定的な勝利を収めた議会軍は、国王チャールズ1世の引き渡しを要求します。父王から王権神授説を受け継ぎ絶対王政を堅持しようとした国王は議会軍に敗れ、1649年1月30日に自ら芸術家ルーベンスに内装と天井画の制作を依頼して完成を見たホワイトホール宮殿のバンケティングハウス前で公開処刑に処せられました。この瞬間に全イングランドは国王を失い、脈々と受け継がれて来た王制は一旦幕を閉じます。そして同年以降、クロムウェルはイングランドの護国卿となり、独裁者としての権勢を誇ります。国王が残した人生最期の言葉は「我はこの墜落した王位を離れ、墜落し得ぬ人生の極致へと向かう。そこには如何なる争いも存在せず、平安で満たされている」でした。この年からチャールズ2世による歴史的な王政復古までの11年間、イングランド史上唯一の共和制が出現します。</p>\r\n

<p>国王を失った後の英国はオリバー・クロムウェルを中心とする護国卿時代を迎えます。しかし、議会内では派閥単位での論争が絶えず、共和制の支持層と君主制の復活を願う層の対立構造を生みます。1653年にイングランド議会を完全に掌握してから1658年に死去するまでの間、クロムウェルは実質上国王と同等の権力を有していました。国家の未来の安泰を巡って右往左往する議会の統一を前に、クロムウェル死去の一報がウェストミンスターに流れます。政府内の混乱をよそに、クロムウェルの共和制の強権政治に疲弊していた国民でしたが、クロムウェルの逝去に対し内心安堵します。ヨーロッパ大陸からスコットランドの援軍を得て極秘帰国を果たしていたチャールズ1世の皇太子チャールズは1660年、群衆の大歓声に迎えられてロンドン入りを果たし、王政復古を強く印象付けます。ここに約20年間イングランドを震撼させた共和政の強権政治は終焉を迎えます。</p>\r\n

<p>英国史上唯一の共和制を永遠に刻印する当金貨は、激動のコモンウェルス時代を象徴する歴史的遺産に他なりません。そして何よりも忘れてはならないことは、この体制の崩壊が、21世紀の現代にまで存続することになる英国王室のその後の安泰を確立したという事実です。当コインにはその矛盾に満ちた英国史上の不思議な一時代の名残が見られると共に、護国卿クロムウェルを中心に政権を樹立した議会派の活動初年度に発行されたという点が強調される貴重な作品です。表面中央にはイングランド共和国の盾とそれを取り囲む月桂樹と棕櫚のリースが描かれ、その上には太陽の形を模した独特のミントマークが掲げられています。ラテン語で刻まれることの多い17世紀当時発行のアンティーク・コインですが、表面の碑文は「イングランド共和国」と英語で表記されています。さらに裏面には共和国と同盟国アイルランドの盾の紋章が掲げられており、「神は我々と共に」とピューリタン的な心情をこれもまた英語で表現しています。この時代の全ての金貨は22金で制作されており、この金貨も例外ではありません。また銘文を英語のシンプルな文体で表記した最初期のコインでもあります。真に歴史的な事象である清教徒革命の果てに樹立したイングランド共和国の栄光と落日を同時にシンボライズする当コインは、英国貨幣史上最も歴史の一時代を象徴する名貨として、今後更に希少価値の高揚を実現することでしょう。</p>
