<h2>1847年発行の名貨「ゴチッククラウン」に見るヴィクトリア期ならではのゴチック様式</h2>\r\n
<p>ヴィクトリア女王の即位10周年の記念の年1847年に、その後170有余年に渡って英国コインの顔となる斬新かつ優美なコインが生み出されました。通称「ゴチッククラウン」と呼ばれるこのコインは、19世紀初頭の英国コイン界を席巻していた名彫刻師ウィリアム・ワイオン（1795-1851）が人生の総決算として世に送り出した英国アンティークコインの金字塔です。芸術作品としても高い評価を獲得しているこのコインには、当時流行していたゴチック・リバイバルの様式感を端的に示す幾つかの特徴が見られます。まずコイン表面の有名なポートレート、そして、裏面の十字型の紋章、そしてコイン表裏に刻まれている銘文の字体である「ブラックレター」の採用等、コイン上のあらゆる視覚的要素がこの中世に由来する古風なスタイルによって見事に統一されています。中世期のヨーロッパ大陸で育まれ、特にフランスにおいて大成したゴチック様式は、同時期を代表する建築・芸術様式として浸透し、少なくともルネッサンス勃興までの期間、キリスト教社会における教会建築の主流として数々の傑作を生み出しました。英国における19世紀初頭のゴチック・リバイバルは1837年に即位し英国の女王となったヴィクトリアの治世初期と並行して隆盛を極め、「ヴィクトリアン・ゴチック」なる語が派生する程、英国史の最盛期であるこの未曾有の時代の空気を伝える様式として既存の英国文化との同化を果たし、近代英国史に足跡を残します。</p>\r\n
<h2>セントヘレナによって完璧にリマスターされる「ゴチッククラウン」裏面の十字型のシールド</h2>\r\n
<p>ワイオン芸術の頂点を示す「ゴチッククラウン」ですが、表面のヴィクトリア女王の肖像のみがコインの絶対的価値を高めているように思われることが多いのではないでしょうか。しかし、裏面の十字型の盾の紋章は表面のヴィクトリア女王のポートレートのスタイルとの統一感によって確固たる様式美を表出しており、このコインの付加価値となっている事実を無視することは出来ません。イングランド、スコットランド、アイルランド3国の恒久的な平和を祈念して制作されたこの紋章は、その後の大英帝国造営に向けてのイングランドの主導的立場を感じさせるものです。十字の中心には英国王室が授与する勲章の中で最高位に輝くガーター勲章の徽章が刻まれていることからも、この意匠がイングランドを中心とする連合の重要性を強調していることは明白です。今回ご紹介させて頂くモダンコインは、2022年に英領セントヘレナと東インド会社のコラボレーションによって製作された「ゴチッククラウン」裏面のデザインを踏襲する世紀のリマスター版です。リマスターされた裏面を見てみますと、リリース時のコインの西暦2022年がローマ式数字によって格調高く刻まれており、この新しいバージョン最大の特徴となっています。そして周囲の碑文はオリジナルと同じくブラックレターによって刻まれており、この十字型紋章にゴチック様式ならではの古風な趣をもたらしています。あらゆる角度からゴチック様式の美しさを表出することに成功している当コイン裏面の意匠ですが、既に不動の地位を得ている傑作コインの真に完璧な復刻のみが我々に深い感動を与えるということを例証しているようです。</p>\r\n
<h2>表面のオーストラリア版「エリザベス2世の第5肖像」最大の見どころである「コロネーションネックレスとイヤリング」</h2>\r\n
<p>このセントヘレナ版「ゴチッククラウン」のもう一つの特徴は、コイン表面に描かれた現英国女王エリザベス2世の傑作肖像です。今や英国ロイヤルミントの顔と言っても過言では無い若き才人ジョディー・クラークの代表作である2015年発表の「第5肖像」は、美しい胸部を含むオーストラリア限定のバージョンとして世に知られているものです。女王の頸部と耳元に光彩を与えている宝飾品は、1858年にロンドンの宝石商ガラードによって製作された「コロネーションネックレスとイヤリング」と呼ばれているセットです。これらの宝飾品は実際の戴冠式で着用されていたものではなく、制作の翌年1859年にヴィクトリア女王お気に入りのドイツ人画家フランツ・ヴィンターハルタ―が戴冠式当日の女王を描いた油彩画において女王が身に着けていたため、後に「コロネーション」と命名され脚光を浴びたものです。実際の戴冠式でこそ着用されませんでしたか、その後歴代3人の王妃、そして現英国女王エリザベス2世が戴冠式において着用したことにより伝説化します。コイン表面のオーストラリア版「第5肖像」ならではの写実的な表現力が、裏面の盾の紋章の厳粛な趣を引き立てることに成功しています。そして双方の相乗効果がこの例外的な名作であるセントヘレナによる「ゴチッククラウン」リマスター版の古典美を際立たせ、その絶対的価値を保証しています。</p>
