<p>現在のイギリスがおよそ2千年前にローマ帝国の支配下にあったことは意外と知られていない史実ではないでしょうか。グレートブリテン島を指す最古の名前は、紀元前6世紀ごろのカルタゴ人航海者の記録にある「アルビオン」であったというのが一般的な見解です。その後、紀元前4世紀のギリシャ人商人の航海記にある「プレタニケ」から、現在のブリテン諸島を指す言葉として「ブリトニ」という呼名が誕生し、ラテン語の「ブリタンニア」へと語形変化しました。ローマ人が島を支配した頃、つまり紀元3世紀頃にはブリタニアと呼ばれていた同島ですが、島を擬人化した存在である女神もまたブリタニアと呼ばれるようになり、島と不可分の存在として認知されるようになります。ローマ時代の流通貨にも描かれていたブリタニアですが、その後、5世紀ごろから始まるローマ帝国の衰退と、6世紀以降のアングロサクソン人たちの台頭によって徐々に姿を消すようになります。1066年、ノルマンディー公であったウィリアム征服王がイングランドを支配し、大陸の進んだ封建制を取り入れて王国体制の強化に努めました。そして人口と経済力に勝るイングランドが次第にウェールズとスコットランドを圧倒するようになります。そのような歴史的背景の下に、古代の産物として敬遠されていたブリタニアもまた文芸上にて描写されるようになり、英国の仮の姿としての存在感を取り戻します。そして、その後に続くルネッサンス時代における古代の機運の高まりと共に、ブリタニアもまたイギリス社会における完全な復活を遂げることになります。とりわけエリザベス1世を主人公とする大航海時代には、グレートブリテン島の海に囲まれた地理的条件から海を象徴する女神として尊ばれ、海運国家イングランドの威光を高めることに貢献したことはよく知られています。しかし、ブリタニアが英国貨幣界にコインのデザインとして登場するのは一層時間を要することでした。1660年に共和政イングランドを破って王政を復活させたチャールズ2世の治世12年目の年、つまり1672年に発行されたファージング銅貨にはそれ迄にはなかった新しいブリタニア像が描かれていました。古代の女神として描かれた座像ではありましたが、縦と槍を携えたその荘厳な姿は、女神と言うよりかは女戦士の姿で描写されていたというのがより的を得ています。このコインの発行を皮切りに、その後の歴代国王の治世下にブリタニアを描くコインが続々と発行されるようになり、英国貨幣の定番のデザインとして受け継がれるようになります。英国貨幣の長大な歴史の中で、まだ400年にも満たないコインデザインとしてのブリタニアの変遷ですが、20世紀後半の1987年に英国ロイヤルミントが地金型コインとして発表したブリタニアコインは、既に現代における地金型作品のスタンダードとしての絶対的地位を確立しています。</p>\r\n
