<p>ヨーロッパの広範囲にわたる地域をその支配下に置いた古代ローマ帝国。紀元43年に現在のグレートブリテン島を征服したローマ人達はそれまでアルビオンと呼ばれていたこの島に初めて「ブリタニア」の呼称を与え、いつしか島を守護する女神にも同じ名を冠するようになります。ローマ帝国の衰退と共にローマ人たちが撤退した後もこの島はブリタニアと呼ばれ続けていましたが、その後この名前自体はラテン語とウェールズ人の社会に浸透します。そしてアングロサクソン王朝時代にはケルト系の言語を話すグレートブリテン島で生まれた島民のみがブリタニアに因んでブリトン人と呼ばれていたとのことです。島を擬人化する存在として認識されていたブリタニアの次の英国史上での復活は、16世紀のエリザベス1世の治世まで待たなければなりませんでした。当時、スペインの艦隊を駆逐して一躍世界史上に全貌を現した英国でしたが、女神ブリタニアがそのシンボルとして女王の時代に再び帰り咲いたことは決して偶然では無かったはずです。ブリタニアの表象はエリザベス1世の崩御と共に英国王位を継承した次代のジェームズ1世の時代に受け継がれます。さらに17世紀のチャールズ2世の治世下の1672年にはブリタニアの座像が王の時代を代表するハーフ・ペニー貨とファージング貨のデザインとして初めて採用されます。またスコットランドとの連合王国を1707年に樹立したイングランドは、その同盟関係の強化の象徴としてブリタニアの多様なイメージを巧みに用います。その時の国王であったアン女王の風貌とコインに描かれていたブリタニアのイメージが酷似していたことは、英国貨幣学上の伝説となっているほどです。それ以降、歴代英国王のためのコインの主要なデザインの一つとして受け継がれ、英国貨幣史の変遷と共に記録的な長寿を保ってきました。</p>\r\n
