<p>イギリス東インド会社は、アジア貿易と植民地主義政策遂行のための窓口として過去に存在した在外政府機関として知られています。その創設は他国の東インド会社の創設年、オランダの1602年やフランスの1604年より古く、エリザベス1世の治世最晩年の1600年にさかのぼります。イギリス国王の承認を得たいわゆる勅許会社として機能していた同社は、イングランド銀行やインドの商業資本から融資を受けながら17世紀初頭から19世紀中頃にかけてのアジア貿易と周辺諸国の植民地経営を独占し、本国イギリスに巨万の富をもたらしました。香辛料貿易を主業務としながら、その中心地であるインドに行政機関を構築し、徴税や現地通貨の発行によって次第に行政化したのが事の始まりでした。同時に、軍隊を保有して現地における反乱の鎮圧や、周辺諸国との戦争に備えて軍隊を派遣したりする本格的な植民地統治機関へと発展します。インドで勃発したセ゚ポイの反乱の鎮圧後にインドの統治権を英国王室に譲渡し、1858年に解散しました。設立当時のイギリス東インド会社はインドへの航海が要する資金を捻出することに悪戦苦闘していたようで、時の君主エリザベス1世に出資を要請したりしていたようです。その後は航海ごとに出資者を募るスタイルが一般化し、インドから持ち帰る香辛料を始めとする輸入品の質と量によって徐々に社会的な注目を集めるようになります。当初はインドの文物のみを取り扱っていた同社でしたが、次第に事業を拡大させるようになり、中国をはじめとする周辺諸国から産出された輸出品をヨーロッパその他の地域に卸すスタイルが主流となります。チャールズ2世によって王政復古が成就された後の1670年代から1680年代にかけて、イギリス経済は空前の好景気を迎えます。しかし、名誉革命によってジェームズ2世が失脚すると、次の国王ウィリアム3世は1698年に同様の新たな会社を設立し、東インド会社の独占権が見直されるという事態に見舞われます。その後、アン女王の時代の1709年にこれら二社は合併されることになります。軍備の増強は最初からイギリス側にとっては不可欠とされていた事項であり、後にインド全域を防衛するための観点からも重要との認識がありました。このような改革に支えられて、東インド会社はインドにおける商事会社としてのみではなく、現地における徴税業務と治安維持要務を同時に行う機関へと発展を遂げました。強化された同社の拡張を推進していく過程において、イギリスは次第に領土を拡大させ、インドにおける植民地政策は完成の域に達します。領土を拡大する上で反抗的な地域は武力で抑え込み、従順な個所はイギリス側にとって有利な軍事保護条約の締結によって保護国化しました。しかし1857年には英領インドでセ゚ポイの反乱が勃発します。東インド会社の支配に反発したインド兵が立ち上がりますが、東インド会社の常備軍によってすぐに鎮圧されます。しかし、この事件によってインドでの業務遂行に限界を感じた同社は、イギリス本国の勧告もあり、1858年に運営を停止することになります。その後も、少なくとも1874年までは業務そのものは継続していた東インド会社ですが、これはイギリス政府か同年まで株主に配当金の支払いを約束していたためであり、企業としての運営は1858年には完全に消滅していたことは確かで、時の君主ヴィクトリア女王にその運営権は委ねられることになります。今回ご紹介させていただくコインは、東インド会社消滅後の1876年に英領インドで発行されたルピー銀貨です。コイン表面には王冠を頭上に戴く左向きのヴィクトリア女王の格調高い肖像が描かれています。この肖像には1847年と1853年に二度発行された有名なゴチッククラウン銀貨との共通点が顕著です。とりわけ王冠のデザインや女王の髪型や顔の表情などが銅銀貨のデザイン詳細を彷彿させるものです。ただ女王の衣装のみは当ルピー銀貨の方がより装飾的であり、流通貨ならではの新鮮さが感じられます。裏面中央には額面価「１ルピー」の文字と同時に発行年を示す1876の数字が刻まれています。1876年といいますと、ヴィクトリア女王が英国君主としては初めてインド皇帝として即位する年の一年前ということで、歴史の重みを感じさせます。碑文の周囲には植物の文様からなる装飾的で美しいフラワースクロールが描かれており、インド通貨ならではの東洋的な要素とイギリス芸術に代表される西洋的な装飾美が見事な融合を果たしているように見受けられます。在りし日の東インド会社によってインドの植民地の足掛かりを掴んだヴィクトリア期のイギリス。当銀貨は、当時のイギリスの世界に対する野望を反映する歴史遺産としても一見の価値ありと思われます。</p>
