<p>英語で<strong>「The Coat of Arms of England」</strong>と呼ばれる王室紋章は、歴史的にはイングランド王国の歴代国王の紋章の集合体として知られていますが、現在は王室のみならず普遍的にイギリス国家そのものを象徴する紋章として機能しています。</p>\r\n
<p>アームズは約1200年頃にプランタジネット朝の諸王たちによって採用されたことが始まりとされています。中央の盾の部分は四分割されており、現在のイギリス連合王国のものにはイングランド以外に<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">スコットランドとアイルランド</strong>の紋章が挿入されているのが特徴です。歴史的に見ますと、過去のアームズにはフランス王家の紋章であった「フルール・ド・リス」が挿入されていた時期もありますが、これはイングランド王のフランス王位請求権を象徴していました。中世期のプランタジネット朝以降のイギリス王室は、現在のフランスのボルドー一帯に広大な地所を所有していたことからこの王位請求権という発想が誕生したと伝えられています。</p>\r\n
<p>アームズは紋章学の世界においてはイングランドを象徴する紋章として急速に発展を遂げ、数百年間にわたってイギリス関連諸国において継承されてきました。一例を挙げますと、イギリス連邦の一国であるカナダのアームズもその一種とされています。ただカナダにおいては。アームズがイギリス王室やカナダ政府を象徴するものとして使用されることは非常に稀であり、メープルリーフが描かれている国旗がその代わりとして公式な役割を果たすことが多いようです。</p>\r\n
<p>現代のイギリス連合王国のアームズはイギリス国内の各種スポーツ団体によっても使用されており、サッカー協会を始め、イングランド・ウェールズ・クリケット協会、イングランド・ホッケー協会、そしてイングランド・ボクシング協会等の主要なスポーツ団体によって使用されて脚光を浴びています。1707年5月1日、それまでのイングランド王国は約100年間にわたる宿願であったスコットランドとの連合王国、いわゆる<strong>「グレートブリテン連合王国」</strong>を成立させました。これを象徴するかのように、それ以降の同国の四分割されたアームズの第1と第4の箇所にイングランドを意味する三頭のライオンのデザインを挿入しました。フランス王位を象徴するもう一つの紋章はその後もしばらくの間は使用されていましたが、1789年にフランス革命が勃発し、その後、数年間の内にフランス王室そのものが崩壊し、1792年の第一共和政の開始と共に撤廃されそれ以降は用いられなくなりました。ジョージ3世の時代の1800年にはそれ以前のフランス王室の紋章に代わってグレートブリテンの新たな領土となったアイルランドを象徴する竪琴の意匠が新たに考案されました。その1年後の1801年1月1日より、ジョージ3世にとって新たに変更が加えられたロイヤル・アームズが、王室ならではのスタイルと称号を元にした独自の様式感によって発表され、今日見られる「ロイヤル・コート・オブ・アームズ」の原型を確立しました。</p>\r\n
