<p>63年7か月に及んだ大英帝国の女王ヴィクトリアの長期在位下において、英国貨幣のお膝元であるロイヤルミントは数々の傑作ポートレートを世に送り出し、その都度、称賛を勝ち得てきました。女王の治世の最初期の1838年に発表され、その後も世紀を超えて高く評価されている傑作が、あの「ヤングヘッド」と呼ばれているコイン・ポートレートの傑作です。当時若干18歳であった女王の瑞々しさが際立つこの美しい肖像は、19世紀初頭に活躍した名コインデザイナー、ウィリアム・ワイオンのキャリア最初期を代表するコインデザインとして、我々の世に受け継がれているものです。そして女王の即位3周年を記念して再びワイオンに白羽の矢が立ち、英国貨幣史上の最高傑作と謳われる名作が誕生しました。「ウナとライオン」の別名によってより一般的なこのデザインは、ワイオンのキャリアの円熟を示す大作として特筆に値します。16世紀英国を代表する詩人・エドマンド・スペンサーの一大叙事詩「妖精の女王」から着想を得たワイオンは、その持てる天分を存分に発揮してコイン上にて原作の物語を再構築し、ヴィクトリア女王を主人公ウナに、そして女王に付き従う大英帝国の臣民をウナの忠実な友ライオンに見立てるという名演出を披露して圧倒的成功を収めました。19世紀中盤に破竹の勢いで全世界に版図を広げつつあった大英帝国ですが、その広大なる帝国の女主人公としてのヴィクトリア女王の威光をポートレート上にて多面的に表現することは決して容易なことでは無かったはずです。女王の在位期間に発表された全てのコイン肖像の中でも群を抜いて注目を集めたのは、1887年に挙行された在位50周年「ゴールデンジュビリー」の際に新たに制作された「ジュビリー・ヘッド」の名で知られているデザインです。女王自身のリクエストによって英国を代表する宝飾店「ガラード」が制作したとされる小型のコロネットを頭上に戴く上下に長く引き伸ばされた女王の新しいポートレートは、ジュビリーに先駆けてインド皇帝の称号を手に入れたヴィクトリアの絶対的な王権を余すところなく象徴しています。そして次に発表された公式肖像は、1896年の在位60周年「ダイアモンド・ジュビリー」を待つことなく1893年にリリースされた「オールド・ヘッド」の異名によって知られている名デザインです。19世紀後半のロイヤルミントにて活躍したデザイナー、サー・トマス・ブロックによって製作されたこの新しい肖像は、老年期に達していた最晩年の女王の孤高の境地を表現するポートレートとして当時、大いに注目を集めました。</p>\r\n

<h2>得難いヴィクトリアン・アンティークコインとして無限の可能性を秘める名貨「オールド・ヘッド」</h2>\r\n

<p>今回ご紹介されていただく作品は、最晩年に差し掛かっていた1893年当時のヴィクトリア女王の威厳を余すところなく描くコイン肖像を表面に掲げる大作に他なりません。1861年に最愛の夫アルバート公爵を亡くした女王はその後、自身の崩御の年1901年まで実に40年間にわたって喪服を着用していたことが伝説として記録されています。当コインの頭上に見られるヴェールは、未亡人となった女王の貞淑さとキリスト教徒としての絶対感を暗示していると言われています。コイン表面に描かれているこの左向きの肖像は、前作「ジュビリー・ヘッド」とは異なり王冠が省略されています。代わりに頭上に挿入された宝飾品は、より軽量のダイアデムであり、ヴェールから突出した部分のみではあるものの、実物の燦然とした輝きを見事に再現しています。そして女王の胸元を飾る宝飾品は「コロネーション・ネックレス」の通称で知られている歴史的なジュエリーです。コロネーション＝戴冠式と呼ばれているために1837年の実際の戴冠式の場に於いて女王が着用していたと誤認されがちなこの大粒のダイアモンドが散りばめられたネックレスですが、実際に制作されたのは1850年代のことで、戴冠式記念の油彩画の制作に際して画中に挿入されたことからこの呼称を与えられたと言われています。新規のコンペティションに出品された数多くの作品の中から選定され、勝利を勝ち取ったこのポートレートは、女王自身もことのほかお気に召していたようで、晩年の女王ならではの風格を表出する独特の作風によって、これ迄多くのコイン愛好家を魅了してきました。また裏面に描かれている「聖ジョージの竜退治」の意匠は、ジョージ3世の治世以降、全ての歴代国王の治世を代表するソブリン金貨裏面の主要な題材として今日なおも脈々と受け継がれているベネデット・ピストゥルッチによる傑出した作品です。発行枚数が多いことでも知られている当コインですが、今後、正真正銘のヴィクトリアン・アンティークコインの大作として一層の熟成が期待されながら、得難くも突出した美しさを誇る真のアンティークコインとして継続的な価格推移を遂げることでしょう。</p>
