<p>1820年のジョージ3世の崩御を受けて英国王位を継承してジョージ4世となった摂政王太子ジョージ。その破天荒ともいうべき生涯は、型破りでありながらも実に明快で、また極めて美しいものでもありました。病床に伏すことの多かった晩年の父王に代わっての摂政王太子としての政務を怠らず、英国の宿敵ナポレオンを打倒するに至ったジョージ4世の時代は、わずか10年間ながらも歴史上稀に見る充実した時節であったことは確かです。パクス・ロマーナの理想を掲げて英国の平和を実現し、ナポレオン戦争後のヨーロッパの秩序回復に貢献したばかりか、その発展に寄与した点は歴史的に見ても特筆すべき君主の天賦の才能と見なされるべきでしょう。しかしジョージ4世の真の才能は政務の運営のみに止まりませんでした。生来の美意識に恵まれた国王は時代の最先端を行くファッションリーダーとしての才能を発揮したばかりか、英国王室を代表する繊細な感性の持ち主としての高い美意識を十全に発揮します。特に現存する英国王室所有の宮殿や居城の数々は、王の時代の大改築を経て今日受け継がれているものばかりです。一例を挙げますと、首都ロンドンにおける英国王の公式な宮殿として知られるバッキンガム宮殿は、19世紀初頭を代表する建築家ジョン・ナッシュの助言を得て王の時代に改築され、今日見られる形に改められたものです。また王室所有の離宮として知られるウィンザー城は、壮大なバンケット・ルームを始めとするステートルームのほとんどが王の治世下に改めて美化されたものであり、王の美意識の片鱗を窺うことができます。また、取り分け王の感性を物語るうえで欠くことのできない建造物として、イングランド南部ブライトンの地に創建されたロイヤルパヴィリオンが挙げられます。アラブと中国芸術の折衷様式を基調とするその全貌は壮観であり、その当時としては奇想天外なる建物であったものの、今日においてはその時代や国境を越えた国際性が高く評価されており、王の慧眼の賜物として今日なおも訪問者の審美眼と心を刺激し続けています。</p>\r\n

<h2>ナポレオン戦争後のパクス・ロマーナの理想を表裏に掲げる19世紀初頭記念メダルの最高傑作</h2>\r\n

<p>今回ご紹介させていただく作品は、英国貨幣史上に永遠に刻まれる歴史的な銀メダルの逸品です。1822年、ジョージ4世は英国君主としてはチャールズ2世の治世以来となるスコットランドの訪問を実現します。1603年にスコットランド国王ジェームズ6世がイングランド王ジェームズ1世として即位したことによって、イングランドとスコットランドの同君連合が実現しましたが、両国が独立した国家であることには変わりませんでした。その後、アン女王の時代の1707年には宿願のグレートブリテン連合王国の成立が実現し、両国はそれ以降、統一国家としての道を歩むことになります。そしてジョージ4世の即位によってついに実現したイングランド君主のスコットランド公式訪問でした。メダル裏面には、ダイアデムを戴く女神から王冠を進呈される大礼服姿のジョージ4世が印象深く描かれています。寓意的な主題に基づくこの裏面の意匠は、何よりもイングランドとスコットランドの友好関係を象徴するものです。そして表面には、在りし日のジョージ4世の威厳を表出する左向きの肖像が掲げられており、威風堂々たる趣です。「神の恩寵によるジョージ4世・大英帝国国王にして忠誠の擁護者」という定型の碑文がその周囲に付されていますが、その一文の意味を象徴するが如く荘重な月桂冠が王の頭上を誇らしく飾っています。歴史的記念メダルの範疇に収まらないドラマティックな外観がコイン・メダル愛好家を魅了するに違いない当作品は、19世紀初頭の激動の英国が度重なる戦闘の末に勝ち取ったパクス・ロマーナの理想を現代に伝える歴史的記念メダルの最高傑作の部類に入るものです。</p>
