<p>数々のカトリック寄りの政策の断行によって英国議会との対立を深め、1688年に勃発した名誉革命の果てにフランスへの永久追放を余儀なくされた国王ジェームズ2世。しかし革命によって英国が求めたものは国王の国外退去のみではありませんでした。次期国王の選出は議会にとっての喫緊の課題であり、まず誰よりもプロテスタント信仰者に白羽の矢が立つことは目に見えていました。その点、ジェームズ2世の長女メアリーは父王とは異なり、幼少時からプロテスタントとしての教育を施されていたため議会との関係は良好であり、また結婚相手のウィレム王子（後のウィリアム3世）も同じくプロテスタント国家の同盟国オランダの出身ということもあって次期国王の最有力候補としては申し分ありませんでした。父王が英国を去ったあと、メアリーが自身の即位の条件として議会に提示した内容は夫ウィレムとの同権での王位継承という前代未聞のものでした。当初若干のためらいはあったものの、プロテスタント信仰者メアリーの即位を願う議会の熱烈な意向によって英国史上初となる共同統治体制が敷かれることになります。英語圏では今でもこの時代を「ウィリアム・アンド・メアリー」と呼び習わし、名誉革命の後に突如として訪れた輝かしい一時代として記憶されています。17世紀後半の英国で活躍したサー・ジェームズ・ソーンヒルを始めとする優れた宮廷画家たちの手による二人の国王の肖像画が数多く残されていますが、それらは仲睦まじい国王夫妻の姿を描くものがほとんどで、英国人が理想とする永遠の夫婦愛が共通のテーマとなっています。1694年にはメアリー2世が先に崩御し、それ以降はウィリアム3世による単独統治となります。後継者問題を深く憂慮したウィリアム3世は、亡き妻の実妹アンを次期国王に擁立するために現行法の改案に乗り出します。王の治世最晩年の年1701年に施行された新たな「王位継承法」は、新王位継承者をステュアート朝のジェームズ1世の直系に限定し、尚且つプロテスタントの信仰者と規定する排他的な内容を特徴としていました。この新法はアンの迅速な即位を実現したのみならず、今日のウィンザー朝へと続くその後300年の英国王位の安泰を確証した点において特筆されるべきものであり、政務において優れた能力を発揮したウィリアム3世の治世下最大の功績として記録されています。</p>\r\n

<h2>ウィリアム3世とメアリー2世による共同統治時代の幕開けを象徴する英国アンティーク銀貨の至宝</h2>\r\n

<p>1688年に即位したウィリアム3世とメアリー2世ですが、その翌年にはロンドンのウェストミンスター寺院にて盛大なる戴冠式が執り行われました。今回ご紹介させていただく作品は、式の挙行の記念に発行された歴史的な銀メダルであり、共同統治の幕開けを象徴する歴史的遺産でもあります。メダルの表面には共同統治を象徴する2人の国王の横顔を一枚に描く有名なポートレートが描かれています。頭上に月桂冠が見られる方がウィリアム3世で、その隣にはメアリー2世が控えめに描かれています。どちらの肖像も油彩によって描き残されている特徴のある夫妻の風貌を見事に表出しており、当時のロイヤルミントの職人技を堪能することができます。肖像の周囲には「ウィリアムとメアリー・国王と女王」という意味のラテン語碑文が刻まれており、英国史上未曾有の共同統治体制を一文によって端的に要約しています。そしてメダル裏面にはギリシャ神話の有名な「パエトンの墜落」の一場面が描かれており、光彩陸離たる劇的効果を生んでいます。バロック期の英国で活躍したフランドル出身の画家ルーベンスの名画によっても著名なこの名場面は、神話中の人物パエトンが太陽神の戦車を暴走させたために、最高神ゼウスの逆鱗に触れて雷光によって撃墜される瞬間を捉えたものです。この名意匠はベルギーのアントワープ出身で、長年にわたって英国ロイヤルミントで活躍したヤン・ローティアーズの手によって再現された創造性豊かな作品です。裏面デザインの上部には「全ての者の頭上に王冠が授けられるにあらず」という意味の厳格な碑文か刻まれており、ウィリアム3世とメアリー2世の共同統治が何よりも天命によるものであったことを示唆しているように感じられます。表裏共に二人の国王が分かち合った王位継承の正統性を強調する内容を持つ当銀メダルは、名誉革命後の英国に限りない安泰をもたらした偉大なる夫妻の思い出に捧げられるアニバーサリーメダルの傑出した一例に他なりません。</p>
