<p>1702年のウィリアム3世の崩御に伴い英国王位を継承したアン女王。即位の前年に制定された王位継承法は、ジェームズ2世の直系に当たるメアリー2世の実妹であるアンを次期君主として擁立するために可決された法案でした。またアン以降の君主、とりわけジョージ1世の王位継承を決定した直接的な要因としても知られています。崩御の年1714年まで12年間にわたって英国を統治したアン女王の歴史上での存在は、後の大英帝国の基盤を築き上げた功によって今も尊崇の対象として記憶され続けています。とりわけその歴史的名声を決定的としている最大の要因として、治世5年目にして成就したイングランドとスコットランドによるグレートブリテン王国の成立が挙げられます。エリザベス1世亡き後、1603年に王位を継承したスコットランド王ジェームズ6世ことイングランド国王ジェームズ1世の長年にわたる宿願は、一人の君主の下に連合王国として二国を同時に統治することでした。そして100年の時を経てアン女王の治世下に遂にこの宿願は成就され、現在の英国の基盤となっていることは、歴史的に見ても女王の治世下最大の快挙であると言えるでしょう。他方で、私生活の女王は薄幸の女性として語られることが多く、17回妊娠するもそのうち16回までが死産もしくは流産の憂き目に遭い、継嗣を残すことは叶いませんでした。その悲しみを紛らわすために生前ブランデーを愛飲していたことから、女王はいつしか「ブランデーナン」の異名を取るようになりました。しかし、それとは対照的に、君主としての政務能力に秀でていた女王の時代に、英国は対外的に大きな成功を収めたことも事実です。先王ウィリアム3世の時代に準備されていたスペイン継承戦争はアン女王の時代に本格化しますが、イングランドはオランダと共にオーストリアを支持し、フランスおよびスペインと戦火を交えることになります。女王は友人の夫マールバラ伯爵をイングランド軍総司令官に任命してフランドル・ドイツ戦線に派遣し、伯爵の友人シドニー・ゴドルフィンを大蔵卿に任命して戦争を遂行させました。女王の治世下における度重なる戦勝によって英国が歴史的に優位に立ち、国家としての存在感を発揮することになったことは、後の世の歴史家たちによって語り継がれている通りです。</p>\r\n

<p>今回ご紹介させていただく作品は、アン女王治世下の1710年にイングランドが大きな勝利を収めたサラゴサの戦いでの戦勝を記念して発行された銅メダルです。サラゴサの戦いは。スペイン継承戦争中に勃発した、スペイン・ブルボン家の軍勢とイングランドを含むオーストリアの多国籍軍による戦闘です。メダルの裏面左には、玉座に座る堂々たるアン女王の姿が描かれています。その面前には各国の国旗を女王に捧げる有翼の天使が描かれており、ある種の物語性を感じさせます。裏面上部には「撃破されたスペイン」の文言が刻まれており、英国の勝利を称えています。そしてメダル表面には、左向きのアン女王のポートレートが三次元的な立体性の下に再現されています。通常のコイン上に描かれている肖像とは全く異なる豪華絢爛たるもので、頭髪を飾る髪飾りや衣装のドレープなどが細部にわたってきめ細やかに再現されています。肖像周囲には女王の王名アンと共に、サラゴサの戦いが勃発した8月を意味する「AUGUSTA」の一語が付されています。18世紀初頭のイングランドを舞台とするアン女王の治世を象徴する当銅メダルは、激動の時代に相応しい審美性と歴史的価値を有する記念メダルとして制作された第一級の芸術品に他なりません。</p>
