<p>ソブリンの名の下にイギリスで発行された金貨の歴史は古く、ヘンリー7世統治下のイングランド王国時代の1489年のことでした。20シリング相当と見なされていたその当時のソブリン貨ですが、表面には額面価表示が無かったにもかかわらず、1ポンドと等価と設定されるイングランド史上初コインとして登場しました。コインの名称「ソブリン」は、その見栄えのする大きなサイズ感と、コイン表面に描かれていた正面を向いた君主の堂々たるポートレートから名付けられたと考えられます。このオリジナル・ソブリン貨はまた、君主の肖像が描かれたイングランド史上初の法定金貨としても知られており、それ以降の時代のソブリン貨の典型的なプロトタイプとなりました。このオリジナルのソブリン貨は23カラットゴールド（95.83％）で240グレインの重量を持つものでした。しかしヘンリー8世の時代に純金の含有率は22カラット（91.67％）へと低減され、それ以降、22カラットは金貨のスタンダードとされ、ブリテン諸島と後のアメリカ合衆国では「クラウン・ゴールド」と呼ばれていました。この22カラットのソブリン貨は直径42㎜で、15.55グラムの重量がありましたが、既存のリヤル金貨のおよそ2倍の重量でした。この新しい貨幣は1480年代以降西アフリカからヨーロッパに大量に運び込まれていた金塊を用いて制作されたものでした。ヘンリー8世自身はこの新しい金貨をダブル・ソブリンと呼んでいましたが、すぐに再びソブリンと呼ばれるようになりました。市場で流通するには高額過ぎることもあってか、オリジナルのソブリン貨はどちらかというと特権階級への贈答品として用いられていたのではないかと考えられます。倍の厚みを持つピエフォータイプのダブル・ソブリン貨も発行されていましたが、これもまた同様の目的で発行されていたようです。なおオリジナル・ソブリン貨に付されている省略形の碑文は「A DOMINO FACTUM EST ISTUD ET EST MIRABILE IN OCULIS NOSTRIS」と読むことができますが、これは「これは神の成せる業であり、我々の眼には素晴らしきものと映る」という意味で、旧約聖書の詩編からの引用です。エリザベス1世の没後、スコットランド国王ジェームズ6世がイングランド王ジェームズ1世として即位しましたが、その1年後、国王はイングランドとスコットランド両国における自身の統治を象徴するユナイト貨を新たに導入し、ヘンリー7世の時代以降、115年間に及んだオリジナル・ソブリン貨の歴史は一旦幕を閉じることになります。</p>\r\n

<h2>時を経て受け継がれるソブリン貨に対するオマージュとして日の目を見る2種のコイン</h2>\r\n

<p>ソブリンという名称の下に、500年以上に渡る長い歴史を有するソブリン貨ですが、現代受け継がれているこの名称の金貨は、ナポレオン戦争後の1817年に施行された金本位制に基づく大改鋳時に発行された貨幣の流れを汲むものです。ナポレオン戦争によって混迷を極めていた英国経済を立て直すために考案されたこの新たな貨幣制度によって、イギリスは自身のヨーロッパにおける主導権を回復し、再び対外的な特権を行使するようになります。これはまた後の大英帝国の構築へと繋がり、前世紀から勃興していた産業革命の空前の成功を背景として、イギリスの国力の増強に貢献したと言えます。近代以降も歴代君主の治世を象徴する法定金貨の最上位に位置する格調高いソブリン金貨ですが、今回ご紹介させていただく商品は、英国貨幣界を代表する名貨として知られるソブリン金貨を記念する2種のコインです。そのうちの1枚は、近代ソブリン金貨の代表的デザインとして人気を博した王冠を戴く大型のロイヤル・コート・オブ・アームズを再現するものです。この優れたデザインの創造主は、フランスのコインデザイナー、ジャン・バプティスト・メルランです。今回のリリースが取り挙げるもう一つの傑作は、1817年の初リリース以降、英国ソブリン貨の裏面を代々飾ってきたベネデット・ピストゥルッチの永遠の傑作「聖ジョージの竜退治」です。これら2枚の表面には、既に高評価を獲得している現国王チャールズ3世の「公式第1コイン肖像」が描かれています。現代の名デザイナー。マーティン・ジェニングス氏の描写力の妙技を堪能することのできるこの作品は、現代コイン・ポートレートの新たな傑作として英国貨幣史上に足跡を残しました。22カラットゴールドは通称「ローズ・ゴールド」と称されてコインコレクターから愛されていますが、これら2種は深みのある薔薇色がソブリン金貨ならではの古典的なデザインを際立たせており、時を経てヴィンテージとして、またいつかはアンティークとして代々受け継がれていくに相応しい威厳と美観を備えています。</p>
