<p>18世紀後半から19世紀にかけて<strong>英国を発祥地</strong>として興った<strong>中世ゴチック様式の復興</strong>は、主に建築分野において多大なる影響を及ぼしました。しかし、ヴィクトリア期になりますとその範疇に留まらず、文学を始めとするあらゆる芸術ジャンルにわたって顕著となります。</p>\r\n
<p>ヨーロッパ大陸から輸入され、当時のイングランドにおいて隆盛を見た新古典様式の装飾過多な傾向とは著しい対比を示すこの新しい解釈によるゴチック様式は、やがて<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">英国独自の審美性との絶妙な融合</strong>を果たし、英国固有の様式として定着することになります。</p>\r\n

<h3>英国における造形分野に浸透していったゴチック様式</h3>\r\n
<p>18世紀の中盤に興った産業革命の恩恵を背景として伝播したこの復興様式を紐解きますと、同時期の1750年代に作家ホレス・ウォルポールが著した怪奇小説<strong>「オトラント城奇譚」</strong>の内容そのままに改築されたゴチック様式の田園邸宅を源流としていることに気付きます。</p>\r\n
<p>そこには18世紀末のヨーロッパ大陸において花開いた<strong>ロココ</strong>容姿の軽薄さは全く見られず、実際の建築のデザインから着想を得た訳ではないものの、古い文献や図版を元に、細部にわたって研究した跡を窺うことができます。このようにして建築の領域から徐々に英国における造形分野に浸透していったゴチック様式ですが、<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">英国コインのデザインとして採用されることは当時としては前代未聞であったことでしょう。</strong></p>\r\n
<h3>前例のない挑戦</h3>\r\n
<p>前例の無いこの挑戦を敢行したのは、ジョージ王朝末期からヴィクトリア期にかけての英国ロイヤルミントを代表する<strong>天才彫刻家ウィリアム・ワイオン</strong>（1795年－1851年）その人でした。</p>\r\n
<p>1847年、時の英国君主<strong>ヴィクトリア女王の即位10周年</strong>を記念する新しいクラウン銀貨のデザインを依頼されたワイオンは、それ迄にも彼の作風の中心を成していた新古典様式を用いてではなく、当時、未だ主流では無かった中世ヨーロッパ由来のこの様式を採用し、空前の成功を収めます。</p>\r\n
<p>表面の女王のポートレートに見られる装飾品や衣装のデザインに見られる絶妙なバランス感覚は、同様式特有の字体<strong>「ブラックレター」</strong>（𝕭𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖑𝖊𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗）による周囲の碑文との見事なまでの統一感によって強調されるという一種の芸術的効果を生んでいます。そしてその造形美は、裏面に刻まれている連合王国3国の国章を模った十字型の紋章、さらにはその周囲の、これもまたブラックレターで刻まれた格調高い碑文からも伺うことができます。ワイオンの才能の賜物と言っても過言では無いこのコイン両面の秀逸なデザインは、英国コイン上におけるゴチックリバイバルの好例として貨幣界における伝説となり、その後<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">「世界で最も美しい英国銀貨」</strong>の異名を取るほどの例外的な高評価を確立するに至りました。</p>\r\n
