<p>西欧社会における押印の習慣は、アッシリア、バビロニア、エジプトの各古代文明をその起源とするというのが定説です。世界最古の印鑑は、紀元前3300年頃にシュメール人が発明した円筒形の印鑑であったと伝えられていますが、それは円筒型の側面に文字を刻印し、書類に印字するとという極めて原始的な手法を特徴とするものでした。押印は承認や真贋の補償の手段の一種として古代社会において重用され、その後、数千年をかけて全世界に広まりました。また旧約聖書中には実印や認印に関する制度のくだりが40か所以上散見され、いかに古代社会において押印の習慣が重要視されていたかを知ることができます。あるものが適正な承認手続きを経ていることを確認したり、関係者の合意に用いられたりとその用途は多岐にわたりますが、西洋以外の世界各地にこの非常に利便性に富んだ習慣が伝播するのにそう時間はかかりませんでした。メソポタミアからヨーロッパに伝わった同習慣はその後中国にも伝わり、東アジア文化に多大なる影響を及ぼします。そして中国から数多くの文物と共にわが国日本にも渡来し、ここにアジア文化圏髄一の印鑑文化が形成されることになります。日本の歴史に登場する最古の印鑑は、古代の女帝持統天皇に木製の印鑑が献上されたとの記録が残っているものですが、当時の印鑑は祭礼の神具として用いられていたとのことです。ヨーロッパの国々の中でも特に押印の習慣と密接にかかわってきたのは、古代ローマ帝国による支配以降、約2千年間に及ぶ長大なる歴史を誇る英国に他なりません。とりわけ英国王室とそれとの関係は深く、エドワード懺悔王やウィリアム征服王の治世を経て国家の象徴としてのグレート・シール（国璽）が数多く創造され、歴代英国王の、ひいては王室のシンボルとして珍重されてきた来歴を持ちます。君主の意思や特権が反映されるそれらのグレートシールは、過去1千年の英国史を何よりも代弁するものであり、それらを生み出した歴史的背景のもとに英国文化の集約と見なされて今日に至ります。</p>\r\n
