<p>英国王ヘンリー5世とフランス王シャルル6世の娘キャサリン・オブ・ヴァロワの長子として誕生したヘンリー6世。父王の崩御に際して<strong>生後9か月の時に王位を継承</strong>したため、幼い国王を補佐する目的で<strong>摂政制</strong>が敷かれることになります。国王への忠誠を誓う貴族たちが集い、国王の名の下に議会を招集し、王が成年に達するまでの間、<strong>摂政会議（評議会）</strong>を置くことを決定します。そしてヨーロッパ大陸で同時期に継続中であった百年戦争は、<strong>王の叔父ベッドフォード公爵</strong>を筆頭とする評議会が中心となって継続されることになります。</p>\r\n

<h3>動乱期に君臨した英国王</h3>\r\n
<p>母が亡くなる1437年にヘンリー6世は成年王族として親政を開始したものの、寵臣たちの意見の対立から宮廷内での自身の求心力を失います。当時敵対関係にあったフランスとの和平を実現する最善の方法はフランスの<strong>王女アーガレット・オブ・アンジュ</strong>との結婚であると臣下から進言された国王は、これに同意し、1445年に婚礼の儀を挙行します。</p>\r\n
<p>しかしその間も宮廷内では廷臣たちによる政争が絶えず、それが幸いして1451年には中世以降長きにわたって英国王室が所有していたフランス・ボルドーのアキテーヌ公領をフランス軍の強奪によって失います。大陸におけるイングランドの権威の象徴とされていたアキテーヌ公領を最悪の形で喪失したことは<strong>王権の失墜</strong>に繋がり、それが元でヘンリー6世は錯乱状態に陥り、政治基盤の脆弱性を露見することになります。これに加えて<strong>薔薇戦争の勃発</strong>とランカスター家の滅亡を招いたことは王自身による治世の継続を一層困難にします。最終的にロンドン塔に幽閉された王は、絶望と共に最期の時を迎えることになります。</p>\r\n

<h2>教育への貢献によって英国史上に名を刻むヘンリー6世</h2>\r\n

<p>動乱の世に生を受け、幼年にして自身の意志とは関係なく王位を推戴されたヘンリー6世の国王としての評価は生前も没後も定まらず、特に統治能力に関しては否定的な意見が多いのも確かです。</p>\r\n
<p>しかし<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">王の名は教育界への多大なる貢献によって不朽とされ、今もなおその学術に対する高い見識とパトロンとしての自身の役割の認識によって高く評価されています</strong>。英国史上最高位に君臨するパブリックスクール（全寮制寄宿学校）であるイートン校と名門ケンブリッジ大学キングスカレッジが王の勅許の下に設立されたことは余りにも有名ですが、父王ヘンリー5世の時代に着工されたこれらの名門の建設が王の時代に完成の域に達したことはあまり知られていない事実です。</p>\r\n

<p>とりわけイートン校礼拝堂やキングスカレッジ礼拝堂など王の支援によって設立された建築群は、<strong>後期ゴシック様式や垂直様式を基調</strong>とする教会建築に修道院と教育機関としての機能が備わったもので、学術と文化の擁護者としての王の絶大なる存在感を浮かび上がらせています。毎年ヘンリー6世の命日には、イートン校とキングスカレッジの学長が王の臨終の地であるロンドン塔のウェイクフィールド・タワーに集い、薔薇と白百合を手向けることが慣例となっています。</p>\r\n

<h2>エドワード3世の時代からヘンリー6世の治世へと受け継がれた英国貨幣史上に君臨するアンティークコインの帝王</h2>\r\n

<p>ノーブル金貨はエドワード3世の治世下に発行された<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">英国貨幣史上初の量産貨幣</strong>であり、王の治世における貨幣鋳造の第二期（1344年－1346年）に初導入されました。同金貨はその後ヘンリー4世と5世の治世に受け継がれ、ヘンリー6世の時代には前期と後期に分かれる全治世を通じて発行され続けていました。</p>\r\n
<p>しかし素材の<strong>金の欠乏によって生産数が激減</strong>したため、今日現存する王の時代に鋳造されたノーブル金貨は<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">高い稀少価値</strong>を誇るものばかりです。これらは何種類かに分類されますが、ロンドンとフランスのカレで鋳造されたものが存在します。そして王の治世後期にはロンドンの造幣局のみで制作されていました。</p>\r\n
<p>今回ご紹介させていただくコインは、ヘンリー6世の治世下の1422年から1430年の間に鋳造されたノーブル金貨の傑作です。エドワード3世の治世以降基本的には同じデザインを踏襲しているノーブル金貨ですが、当金貨にも数々のデザイン的な共通点が見られます。</p>\r\n

<p>表面には船の中央に佇む王冠を戴く正面向きのヘンリー6世の肖像が描かれ、両手に剣と盾を携えている点もエドワード3世の時代のオリジナル・ノーブル金貨の特徴を受け継いでいると言えます。その周囲には<strong>「神の恩寵による英国、フランス、アイルランドの国王ヘンリー」</strong>と、ヘンリー6世の強大なる王権を示すラテン語による厳かな碑文が刻まれています。</p>\r\n

<p>裏面中央には装飾性豊かな十字型の紋章が刻まれ、中世イングランドから受け継がれていた伝統的な文様の美しさを堪能することができます。その周囲には王冠やフランスを象徴する紋章である<strong>「フルール・ド・リス」</strong>が散りばめられ、咲き誇る薔薇のような華麗なる景観を披露し見るものに強い印象を与えます。</p>\r\n
<p>そしてその周囲には<strong>「ところがイエスは、群衆の間をすり抜け、去って行かれました」</strong>という意味の荘重なるラテン語碑文が続いています。この碑文は<strong>新約聖書のルカの福音書</strong>からの引用文で、自身を崖から突き落とそうと企てる邪悪な群衆の間をすり抜けて、一人でその場を去って行くイエス・キリストの聡明な姿を感動的に描写する名シーンとして知られている一節です。</p>\r\n
<p>エドワード3世の時代における誕生から半世紀以上もの歳月をかけてその精度を飛躍的に向上させたノーブル金貨。当コインは<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">ヘンリー6世の治世下に円熟期を迎えた同金貨の最良の一例</strong>として、上質なコレクションの主要部分を形成するに相応しいハンマー打ちアンティークコインの奇跡的な名品です。</p>
