<p>2022年9月8日の前国王エリザベス2世の崩御に従って英国王位を継承され、<strong>74歳にて新国王として即位したチャールズ3世</strong>。高齢での即位であったため、治世の継続を危惧する声も聞こえていた中、長男のウィリアム王子に王位を譲ることなく自らの意志によって王座を我がものとしたチャールズ3世は、<strong style="background-color:#fffad7;"> 即位の約8か月後の2023年5月6日にロンドンのウェストミンスター寺院にて戴冠式を挙行し、名実ともに英国史上に名を残す君主となりました</strong>。1066年に執り行われたウィリアム征服王（ウィリアム1世）の戴冠式を含めて39人もの歴代国王の戴冠式を見届けてきたイングランド国教会を代表する教会として知られるウェストミンスター寺院ですが、この度のチャールズ3世で以って戴冠式を迎えた史上40人目の君主となるとのことです。1953年6月2日に挙行されたエリザベス2世の戴冠式は、モノクロ仕様ではあったものの英国史上初となるテレビ中継によってイギリス連合王国を始め全世界に配信され、その歴史的な感動は現代英国の伝説として長きにわたって語り継がれていました。それ故に、<strong>70年振りにして21世紀初となるこの度の戴冠式</strong>に対する期待は大きく、新世紀ならではの地球規模での配信に値する一層のクオリティーが望まれていたことは確かです。そして満を持して配信された5月6日のロンドンからの中継を観て全体的に感じたことは、まず以てクラシック音楽に造詣の深いチャールズ国王ならではの多彩な音楽によって支えられた聴覚的感動を最大の特色としていた点でした。英国の五大オーケストラの筆頭であるロンドン交響楽団を中心に編成された戴冠式のための特別大編成オーケストラは、ロイヤルオペラハウスの現音楽監督を務める世界的指揮者サー・アントニオ・パッパーノ主導の元、式のために厳選された格調高い音楽の数々を次々と披露していました。それらの中でも最も深い感動をもたらしたのは、式のクライマックスである「聖油の秘儀」の場面にて演奏されたゲオルク・フリードリッヒ・ヘンデル作曲による「聖人ザドック」の古式ゆかしい音楽ではないでしょうか。視聴率もクライマックスを迎えて正に全世界が注視する中、1727年10月22日のジョージ2世の戴冠式のために作曲されたと伝えられるこの名旋律は、静まり返る会場ウェストミンスター寺院にて厳かに始まりました。冒頭部分において、ほんの数秒間ではあったもののチャールズ国王の後姿が映し出され、いかにこの場面が門外不出の聖なる儀式であるかを強調していたことが忘れられません。そして囲いで覆われた新国王の元にイングランド国教会の最高位にあるカンタベリー大司教が歩み寄り、国王の頭上に聖なる油が注がれているシーンを想像する自由が与えられました。このような目視不可能な場面にて、音楽のみが観衆の想像力を刺激し、得も言われぬ深い感動をもたらしたことは、21世紀ならではの、またチャールズ新国王のための儀式ならではの名演出として永久に語り継がれることと思われます。</p>\n
