<p>1837年のヴィクトリア女王の即位によって新時代を迎えた英国は、世界最大の覇権国家としての空前の大繁栄を前に国家としての地盤を固めつつありました。「女王の時代に国家は繁栄する」と言われて久しい英国ですが、18世紀のアン女王の崩御によるステュアート朝の断絶以来、123年振りの女王の誕生は、その後の大英帝国の隆盛期を予期させるに十分な威厳を英国にもたらしました。63年7か月に及んだ女王の治世はヴィクトリア朝と称され、英国史のクライマックスとして、また女王が統治した稀有の一時代として歴史上に深く刻まれています。夫アルバート公爵との出会いはヴィクトリア女王の人生を大きく変えました。信頼できる配偶者のサポートは女王の治世にとって不可欠で、懐妊中の女王に代わって公爵が執政を行うことも多かったようです。それゆえに公爵の急逝は女王の人生に影を落とし、公爵亡き後の女王は一定の服喪期間を超えて一生涯をそれに捧げたと言われている程です。しかし不幸の後には空前の繁栄が待ち構えていました。1887年に女王が在位50周年を迎えたころの英国は正に大英帝国の理想を成就させ、全世界に広がる一大帝国を築き上げ、英国は女王の崩御の瞬間までその圧倒的威光の下に独立独歩の道を悠然と突き進みます。この「ゴチッククラウン」銀貨は、若き日のヴィクトリア女王の年齢に似合わぬ泰然自若たる風貌を描くと共に、その後の帝国の命運を暗示する記念碑的文化遺産です。</p>\r\n

<h2>「ゴチッククラウン」またの名は英国貨幣界の「モナ・リザ」</h2>\r\n

<p>ヴィクトリア女王の即位10周年を記念して発行されたのが、この史上最も有名な銀貨である「ゴチッククラウン」の愛称で知られている5シリングと等価の銀貨です。発行初年度には8,000枚がリリースされますが、その人気の高さゆえに1853年には更に460枚が追加で鋳造されたことが記録に残っています。その人気の秘密はコイン表裏のデザインにあり、英国貨幣史上最高の彫刻師、ウィリアム・ワイオン晩年の最高傑作とされています。コイン表面に描かれているのは若き日のヴィクトリア女王の侵し難い気品を湛えたポートレートですが、頭上に輝く英国君主の象徴である聖エドワード王冠を始め、女王が身に纏う衣装と装飾品には、中世ヨーロッパに起源を持つ歴史的なゴチック様式の影響が見られ、碑文のゴチック体「ブラックレター」の採用と共に、作者ワイオンの意図する女王の品格の表出に貢献しています。裏面のバランスの良いデザインも圧巻で、表面と同様、ゴシック様式による英連合王国各国の国章が厳かに描かれています。ルーブル美術館所蔵の世紀の大作であるルネッサンスの才人レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチの肖像画「モナ・リザ」は、その優れた人物描写によって世界史にその存在を刻み、絵画史上における一大傑作として地上に君臨していますが、この「ゴチッククラウン」は英国貨幣史上最高のコイン肖像画として、常に最高度の注目を集めて来ました。この1847年初発行バージョンと、それに続く1853年バージョンにおいて、コインのエッジ部分に碑文の無いプレーンエッジ・タイプが主流ですが、女王の即位10周年を意味する「Undecimo」の碑文を持つものも見受けられ、格別の人気を誇っています。なぜ10周年の記念に11番目を意味するUndecimoの語が用いられているかについては諸説ありですが、即位の初年を計上すると、1847年は11年目に当たるためにこの語が採用されたというのが正解の様です。英国貨幣界の「モナ・リザ」である「ゴチッククラウン」こそ、英国銀貨の最高峰として今後もヴィクトリア朝の栄華を物語り、英国アンティーク・コインを鑑賞する喜びを我々に与え続けてくれることでしょう。</p>\r\n
