<p>18世紀後半から19世紀前半にかけてのヨーロッパ全土を舞台として、類稀なる政務能力を発揮した稀代の政治家ナポレオン・ボナパルト。フランス革命後の混乱を収拾し、軍事独裁政権を確立したかれは、後に第1帝政の皇帝として君臨し、ヨーロッパのほぼ全域を支配して祖国フランスに限りない栄光をもたらしました。1769年、フランスの領土コルシカ島に生まれた彼は、多感な青年時代を送るとともに、軍人としての道を歩む決意を固めます。元来革命には興味を示さなかったナポレオンでしたが、1793年、24歳の時に原隊に復帰するや否や貴族士官の亡命という恩恵を得て、特別な手続きもなく大尉に昇進します。また1795年にはパリにおいて王党派によるヴァンデミエールの反乱がおこり、軍の副官として登用されました。1798年7月、ナポレオンの軍隊はエジプトに上陸し、ピラミッドの戦いで勝利を収め、カイロへの入城を果たします。フランスの民衆はナポレオンの凱旋帰国を歓呼でもって迎え入れました。そして同年11月18日、統領政府を樹立し、自ら第一統領となり、実質的な独裁権を掌握し、第二次対仏大同盟によって包囲された祖国の窮状を打破することに専念します。1802年には有名なレジオンドヌール勲章を創設し、また1804年にはいわゆるナポレオン法典の名で知られている「フランス民法典」を公布したことでも歴史上に名を残しています。1804年5月、国会と国民投票によってナポレオンとその子孫の世襲が容認され、名実ともに第一帝政の皇帝「ナポレオン1世」として即位しました。同年12月2日には「フランス人民の皇帝」としてノートルダム寺院において盛大な戴冠式が執り行われました。教皇ピウス7世を招いて開催されたこの儀式は、ナポレオン一世一代の祝典として記録され、当時の大画家ダヴィッドの手による式の模様を忠実に描き写した油彩画が、今もパリのルーブル美術館に展示されています。その後、自国軍を率いて政治家としての絶頂期を迎えたナポレオンは、イギリス、ロシア、オーストリアからなる第三次対仏大同盟に対する戦意を強化します。1805年10月のネルソン提督率いるイギリス軍の前にトラファルガーの海戦では完敗し、同時にイングランド上陸作戦もまた失敗に終わります。これに対し、同年12月に勃発したアウステルリッツの戦いにおいては自身の巧妙な作戦によって勝利し、戦勝の記念としてパリの中心に凱旋門の建設を命じます。軍事的天才と謳われたナポレオンでしたが、その絶頂期は意外と短く1812年から始まる対ロシア戦での苦境から抜け出すことは叶わず、その後、衰退の危機を迎えます。ロシア軍の命運は老獪なミハイル・クトゥーゾフ将軍の手に委ねられましたが、広大なロシアの国土を利用した焦土作戦によって、ナポレオンの軍隊は冬のロシアの脅威を前にして遂に後退を余儀なくされます。対イギリス戦となった1815年のワーテルローの戦いにおいては、ウェリントン公爵率いるイギリス軍に完敗し、最終的にはセントヘレナ島に護送され、島を臨終の地としてその波乱の生涯を終えたと伝えられています。</p>\r\n

<p>今回ご紹介させていただくコインは、皇帝として絶頂を極めていたナポレオンの生涯の最盛期にあたる1807年に発行された珍しい100フランの額面を持つ金メッキ銅貨の逸品です。表面には30代中頃の英雄的なナポレオンの肖像が描かれており、フランス近世史を代表する人物ならではの堂々たる貫禄を醸し出していて圧巻です。ナポレオンを描いた油彩画は数多く残されていますが、風貌がよく知られたナポレオンの特徴を金属上に再現することは至難の業です。その困難をはねのけて迫りくる写実性を披露する当コインは、歴史的名品としての永遠の価値を有する傑作です。ポートレートの周囲には「皇帝ナポレオン」の文言が刻まれており、帝国の君主としての威厳を強調しています。またコイン裏面には、ナポレオンが率いた第一帝政のシンボルである鷹の意匠が配されており、頭上の宝冠が皇帝の権威を象徴しています。意匠の周囲には「フランス帝国」の文言と共に100フランの額面が刻印されています。表裏に見られるきめ細やかな造形美が、当時のパリ造幣局の高度な貨幣鋳造技術と芸術性を限りなく証明しています。ナポレオン亡き後200有余年の時を経て正真正銘のアンティーク品として21世紀に継承された当コインは、過去のフランス史を代表する偉大なる政治家ナポレオン・ボナパルトの往時の姿を偲ぶ歴史的遺品として、コレクターの眼を楽しませ心を満たすことでしょう。</p>
