<p>1837年のウィリアム4世の崩御によって、地上に広がる有史以来最大の帝国の女王として即位した女王ヴィクトリア。その栄光の63年間は「ヴィクトリア朝」と称され、今もなお英国史上の黄金期として人々に記憶されています。しかしその空前の繁栄は一夜にして成立したものではありませんでした。1760年のジョージ3世の即位とほぼ同時期に興った産業革命の空前の成功は、後のジョージ4世とウィリアム4世の治世にも多大なる影響を及ぼし、次代のヴィクトリア女王の治世下において英国は遂に「世界の工場」と呼ばれるようになり、押しも押されぬ経済大国としての地位を確立するに至りました。そしてその後、半世紀以上もの歳月をかけて、女王を頂点に戴く英国は史上最強の覇権国家「大英帝国」の構築に向けて邁進していたことは史実が物語っている通りです。叔父ウィリアム4世は即位前のヴィクトリア王女をことのほか可愛がり、「私はヴィクトリアが成人に達するまで絶対に生き永らえなければならない」と常に周囲に語っていたとの温かいエピソードが残っています。そして王女が成人に達した年、1837年の6月20日午前2時20分、王はウィンザー城にて71年間の生涯を閉じます。これにより、王女は18歳にしてイングランドのハノーヴァー朝第6代君主として即位します。新女王となったヴィクトリアの即位当日の朝は慌ただしかったようで、前国王崩御の後、数時間以内には宮内庁官カニンガム侯爵とカンタベリー大主教ウィリアム・ハウリーの両者を純白の寝衣のまま引見したとの伝説が残っているほどです。そして午前9時には首相であるメルバーン子爵がケンジントン宮殿の女王を訪問し、女王は改めて子爵に国政を一任する意向を伝えたとのことです。その後、午前11時には同宮殿内の「赤の大広間」において即位後初の枢密院会議が開かれます。治世の幕開けを象徴する同会議における国王による勅語発布の場面において、参列した枢密顧問官たちは新女王の優雅な物腰と毅然とした態度に支えられた威厳の籠った勅語の一語一句に感服したと伝えられています。1815年の「ワーテルローの戦い」にて英国軍を勝利に導いた立役者のウェリントン公爵はその中の一人として同会議に出席していましたが、その時の様子を「女王はその肉体で玉座を満たし、その精神によって広間全体を満たしていた」と描写しています。またもう一人の出席者であったジョン・ラッセル卿は「ヴィクトリア女王の時代は後々に至るまで、また世界に対して不滅の光を放つであろう」と看破し、その予言はその後、的中することになります。他のヨーロッパ諸国の王室と比較して英国君主の権限は若干弱く、内閣や議会の力が強い傾向にあったとはいえ、ヴィクトリア女王が即位した当時のそれは依然として絶大なる権勢を誇っていました。いざという時には国王による強権発動さえも可能なほどであり、女王が受け継いだ王位とは帝国という巨大なシステムの中でこそ重要な役割を果たすことのできるものであったことが窺えます。</p>\r\n

<h2>ヴィクトリア女王の戴冠式を記念して発行されたヴィクトリアン・アニーバーサリーメダルの知られざる名品</h2>\r\n

<p>今回ご紹介させていただく作品は、ヴィクトリア女王の即位の翌年、1838年に挙行された戴冠式を祝して発行された戴冠記念メダルです。当時としても大変珍しいホワイトメタル（錫の化合物）を素材とするアニバーサリーメダルの好例であり、独特の素材感がデザインの秀逸性を効果的に浮き彫りにしている芸術作品でもあります。ヴィクトリア女王の公式コイン肖像は63年の治世下において全3種が発表されており、それらの中でも「ヤングヘッド」の通称で知られている「第1肖像」は、18歳当時の女王の瑞々しい横顔を浮かび上がらせる魅力的なポートレートとして、今日なおも絶大なる人気を誇る傑作です。当コインポートレートにも確かに「ヤングヘッド」との類似性が認められますが、頭の後ろで束ねられたシニョンと草花を編んで作ったリース（花輪）を頭上に冠する点が当ポートレート独自の特徴であり、また眼目となっています。肖像の周囲には格調高いラテン語の碑文が刻まれており、「神の恩寵によるヴィクトリア・大英帝国女王」と読むことができます。また裏面にはブリタニア等の女神たちとライオンに見守られて王冠を戴く女王の座像が中央に位置し、英国史上の一大イベントとしてのヴィクトリア女王の戴冠式の様子を精密に図案化しています。ラッパなどの楽器を携えて空中を飛翔する天使の姿が場面全体に華を添えています。裏面上部には「ヴィクトリア大英帝国女王陛下」の一文が見られ、さらに下部には女王の誕生年月日1819年5月24日の日付と、即位した1839年6月20日の日付が刻印されています。その後の女王の治世の安泰を何よりも予見させるこの装飾性豊かな意匠は、若年にして大英帝国を率いることになった偉大なる君主の思い出に捧げられるヴィクトリアン・アンティークメダルの知られざる名品に違いありません。</p>
