<p>19世紀前半の英国貨幣界に君臨したコイン彫刻の巨匠ウィリアム・ワイオン（1795－1851）。その生涯は英国コインの隆盛に捧げられ、約1000年に及んだ王立造幣局（ロイヤルミント）の長大なる歴史の最盛期を築き上げました。ワイオンが誕生するずっと前から、有名、無名を問わず、数えきれないほどの優秀なコイン彫刻家を輩出したワイオン一族は、後継者ウィリアムの誕生によって遂に英国貨幣界の頂点に到達しました。僅か56年間の短い生涯を送ったワイオンでしたが、彼の遺産である名コインデザインの数々は、時代を超越する普遍性を兼ね備えており、21世紀の現代においても決して光彩を失うことはなく、万人に愛されるに相応しい芸術性を秘めているものばかりです。若き日のワイオンは、父や親戚の見習いとしてキャリアを踏み出した比較的地味な存在でした。しかし、彼が創造した作品はどれも陶酔的な美しさと強い呪縛力を特徴としていました。英国上流社会の富裕層を顧客の対象として、数えきれないほど多くの貴重な名作を製作し、惜しげもなく供給していたその当時のワイオンの存在そのものが、今となっては夢か幻のようなものです。しかし、その偉大なる魂は、彼が丹精を込めて創作した個々のコインに今も宿っており、鑑賞者の精神を著しく高揚させる働きを持ちます。数百年に一人しか誕生しない真の天才ワイオンの驚異的な才能を誰よりも先に見抜いたのは、他でもない大英帝国の君主ヴィクトリア女王でした。女王がワイオンと出会ったのは15歳の時のことでしたが、当時の女王は未だ一英国王女に過ぎませんでした。その後1837年に英国女王として即位し、その翌年にはロンドンのウェストミンスター寺院にて戴冠式が挙行されることになります。女王の治世初の公式コイン肖像が考案されたのはその翌年の1838年のことでしたが、当然のことながら女王お気に入りのデザイナーであったワイオンがその任を担うことになります。「ヤングヘッド」という愛称を持つこの優れた肖像ですが、即位当時18歳であった女王の少女の面影と、君主としての威厳の両面を表出しなければならないという極端に困難な課題を見事に克服した作品として、驚嘆に値する出来栄えを見せています。ワイオン芸術の集大成と言っても過言ではないヴィクトリア期の名品として受け継がれたこの「ヤングヘッド」ですが、21世紀の現在においても、その人気は一向に衰えを知りません。</p>\r\n

<h2>ヴィクトリア女王の威厳を余すところなく表出するオーストラリア独自のソブリン金貨</h2>\r\n

<p>今回ご紹介させていただく作品は、当時、世界中に広がりを見せていた大英帝国を構成する主要な国家として繁栄を極めていたオーストラリアで発行された1ソブリン金貨です。英国が発行する法定貨幣と同じデザインのコインを発行する権限を持つ19世紀当時のオーストラリア造幣局では、ソブリン金貨を始めとするオーストラリア独自のコインが毎年大量に生産されていました。当ソブリン金貨表面には前述のヴィクトリア女王の「ヤングヘッド」が描かれており、法的金貨の最高位としてのソブリン金貨ならではの威厳を醸し出しています。女王がこの肖像の使用を承認したのは1838年2月であったと記録が残っていますが、前年に試作目的での貨幣が制作されていた形跡が残っています。左向きの女王の肖像からは、淡いゴールドの輝きと、経年劣化による心地よいマット感が感じられ、正真正銘のヴィクトリアン・アンティーク・コインならではの古色を愛でる楽しみを鑑賞者に与えます。コイン裏面には、「ヤングヘッド」の誕生に先駆けて、その約20年前にイタリア人コイン彫刻家べネデット・ピストゥルッチ（1783-855）が制作した「聖ジョージの竜退治」の優れた意匠が浮かび上がります。1817年の誕生以降、歴代英国王のソブリン貨の裏面を彩ってきたこの大作は、決して古びることなく、今日なおも時代を超越した現代的感覚を我々に披露しています。ヴィクトリア女王の在位50周年「ゴールデンジュビリー」を2年後に控えた時期に発行された当コインですが、史上最大の帝国へと変貌を遂げた1880年代の英国の植民地であったオーストラリアが生み出したアンティークコインの極め付きとしての当コインが、21世紀の現在なおも大英帝国最盛期の英国の権威を象徴している点に、コインコレクターで無くとも英国貨幣史の深奥として魅了されることでしょう。</p>
