<p><strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">1489年、ヘンリー7世の治世下に誕生したオリジナル・ソブリン金貨</strong>。1ポンドと等価とされた英国史上初の法定金貨として一世を風靡し、その後も対外的な決済の一手段として国際的な評価を獲得しました。その後もテューダー王家の歴代国王の庇護の下に英国を代表する金貨として受け継がれたソブリン金貨。とりわけエリザベス1世の時代には、女王の在位期間が長期に及んだこともあり、この種の優れた金貨が多く輩出されました。貿易決済用の通貨としても機能していたソブリン金貨ですが、特にヨーロッパ諸国においては純金の高含有率と並んで、当時興隆期を迎えていたイギリスの国力を象徴する貨幣として高い信用を得ていました。<strong>ヘンリー7世の時代</strong>に導入されたソブリン金貨ですが、<strong>当初の純金の含有率は23カラット</strong>と設定されていました。その後<strong>ヘンリー8世の時代には22カラットへと低減された</strong>にもかかわらず、同金貨は英国の法定金貨としての権威を奇跡的に保持することができました。また22カラットは、その後のソブリン金貨の標準的な純度として定着し、英国貨幣史上に大きな足跡を残しました。<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">コイン表面に玉座に座る正面向きの君主が描かれていたことからソブリンの名称が与えられたと伝えられています</strong>。45年間続いたエリザベス1世の時代が1603年に終わり、スコットランド国王ジェームズ6世がイングランド<strong>国王ジェームズ1世</strong>として英国王室に迎え入れられました。即位の翌年、国王は自身の宿願であったイングランドとスコットランド両国の連合王国の成立を祈念して、ソブリン金貨に代わる新たな法定金貨を導入しました。ユナイトと名付けられたその金貨は、その後、数代にわたって継承されることになりますが、ここにオリジナル・ソブリン金貨の<strong>115年に及んだ輝かしい歴史は一旦幕を閉じることになります</strong>。その後、ソブリンの名の下にこの英国金貨が新たな歴史を刻むのは19世紀を待たなければなりませんでした。19世紀前半のヨーロッパを震撼させたナポレオン戦争でしたが、1815年のワーテルローの戦いでの英国軍に対するフランス軍の敗退と、それに続くナポレオンの失脚によって事態は思わぬ方向に展開します。ナポレオンが去った後に英国の眼前にあったのは、低迷し続ける経済状態でした。この未曽有の事態を打開するために、英国政府は王立造幣局と協力して金本位制に基づく新たな貨幣制度の導入に踏み切ります。<strong>1817年のこの大改鋳によって英国を代表する新たな貨幣にはソブリンの名が与えられ</strong>、ヘンリー7世からジェームズ1世までの治世下に存在した過去のソブリン貨へのオマージュとして、またそれらとは全く異なる性質を有する近代的な貨幣としての新たな道を歩みだします。</p>\r\n

<p><strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">19世紀初頭に奇跡的な復活を果たしたソブリン金貨</strong>。その後もハノーヴァ朝の国王を始め、歴代英国君主たちの庇護の下に最上位に君臨する英国金貨としての名声を保ち続けました。中でも1936年に即位した伝説の英国王エドワード8世の僅か11か月の在位期間の後にごくわずかな数のみ発行されたソブリン金貨は、オークション史上最も高値を付けた英国金貨の傑作として、その存在は今日、半ば伝説化しています。今回ご紹介させていただく商品は、<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">2025年度のモダンコインとして本年発表されたソブリン貨の銀貨バージョン</strong>です。金貨の代名詞とされるソブリン貨ですが、ここに銀貨のバージョンが誕生したことは稀有な事例として英国貨幣史上に記録されることでしょう。コイン裏面には、19世紀初頭の新生ソブリン貨の誕生と共に産声を上げた英国貨幣デザインの永遠の定番「<strong>聖ジョージの竜退治</strong>」が刻まれています。近代以降の歴代君主たちのソブリン貨の裏面を代々彩ってきたこの名デザインは、ウィリアム・ワイオンと並んで19世紀前半の英国貨幣界での人気を二分した天才芸術家、<strong>ベネデット・ピストゥルッチ</strong>（1783-1855）畢生の大作として知られる意匠に他なりません。そしてコイン表面には、2022年の前英国王、エリザベス2世の崩御に際して英国王位を継承した新<strong>国王チャールズ3世の「公式第1コイン肖像」</strong>が掲げられています。ロイヤルミントの名匠<strong>マーティン・ジェニングス</strong>による精緻な表現力を特徴とするこの気高いポートレートは、国王自身の推挙を得て英国貨幣界の新たな顔となりました。表面には君主の肖像、また裏面にはピストゥルッチの「<strong>聖ジョージの竜退治</strong>」と、至って典型的な2種のデザインを両面に描く当銀貨ですが、英国貨幣ならではの古典美を堪能するのにはうってつけであり、またソブリン貨の本質と今後の英国貨幣界の方向性を明確に示唆する第一級の芸術作品でもあります。</p>\r\n
