<p>1820年の父王ジョージ3世の崩御に際して、英国王位を継承した<strong>ハノーヴァー朝第4代国王ジョージ4世</strong>。即位前の国王は病身の父王を補佐する摂政王太子として活躍し、ナポレオン戦争の終盤戦に当たる1815年のワーテルローの戦いにおいて、ウェリントン公爵率いる<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">英国軍の歴史的大勝</strong>を見届けました。</p>\r\n
<h3>ファッションリーダーとして類稀なる美意識</h3>\r\n
<p>在世当時の国王は時代を代表するファッションリーダーとしても知られ、その類稀なる美意識は半ば伝説化しています。</p>\r\n
<p>英国王としての政務の傍ら、王は王室が所有するバッキンガム宮殿を始めとする<strong>重要建造物の改築</strong>を断行したことでも歴史上に名を残しています。中でもジョージ3世の時代以降、英国王室の公邸としてロンドンの中心に居を構えるバッキンガム宮殿は、<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">王の治世下において現在我々が目にする形へと改められ</strong>、その後、約200年近くにわたって英国王室の空前の繁栄を見届けてきました。</p>\r\n
<p>当時を代表する名建築家、<strong>ジョン・ナッシュ</strong>のアドバイスを積極的に受け入れて改築された同宮殿は見違えるように美しく生まれ変わり、ハノーヴァー朝の先代ジョージ3世が心血を注いで蒐集したフェルメールの大作を始めとする古今東西の名画が内部の壁面を飾っていました。王の治世下に新たに創造された建造物も多く、とりわけ東洋趣味を基調とするブライトンの地に創建された<strong>ロイヤルパヴィリオン</strong>は、王の繊細な美意識を反映する芸術作品として、今でも世界中からの訪問者の眼を楽しませています。</p>\r\n

<p>王はまた長年の同盟国、スコットランドを訪問したステュアート朝初の国王としても知られており、その後の二国の長期的な友好関係を構築した初の国王でもありました。僅か10年間の治世ながら、比較的平和な時代として記憶されているジョージ4世の治世は、<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">ナポレオン戦争後の英国の平和を象徴する「パクス・ブリタニカ」</strong>の理想を体現した稀有の時代として、英国史上において異彩を放っています。</p>\r\n

<p>今回ご紹介させていただく作品は、ジョージ4世の治世下の1828年に英領インドのボンベイ管轄区で発行された、<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">超絶的な希少価値</strong>を誇る試作モハール銅貨であり、この種のコインとしては<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">最初期の例</strong>に当たります。</p>\r\n

<h3>モハールコイン</h3>\r\n
<p>モハールという名称を持つ通貨が英領となる前のインドで初めて発行されたのは1540年代のことで、北インド一帯を統治したスルタン、<strong>シェール・シャー・スリ</strong>が無数に存在する地方の部族を統括するために、また<strong>交易の円滑化と地方の平和</strong>を実現するために当貨幣を考案したのが始まりとされています。</p>\r\n
<p>その後、インドを保護国化したグレートブリテン連合王国は、現地での決済用通貨に改めてモハールの名を冠し、その後、約1世紀にわたって同地にて流通貨として使用されていました。</p>\r\n
<p>現在、この種のモハール貨は英国コインに分類され、希少価値の高いコレクターズアイテムとして珍重されています。史上初の英領インドのモハール貨が通貨として流通したのは1830年のウィリアム4世の即位以降とされていますが、<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">当モハール銅貨は王の即位の年よりもさらに二年前の1828年に制作された歴史的なレアリティーです</strong>。モハール貨の過渡期に<strong style="background-color: #fffad7;">試作的な目的</strong>で鋳造されたと思しき極めてシンプルなデザインを特徴とする当銅貨ですが、試行錯誤を重ねているうちにジョージ4世が崩御し、新国王ウィリアム4世の時代を迎えてしまったというのが正当な解釈のようです。国王の肖像が描かれているモハール貨としてはウィリアム4世のものを筆頭に、ヴィクトリア女王、エドワード7世、そしてジョージ5世のものと4代にわたる種の存在が確認されていますが、当銅貨はそれら以前に発行された肖像なしの試作コインであり、この種のもので銅貨が存在したという事実は、今日の英国貨幣界にとって青天の霹靂であったことでしょう。</p>\r\n

<p>コイン裏面には英国の最高勲位<strong>ガーター勲章</strong>の徽章と思しき意匠が描かれており、鑑賞者の眼を楽しませます。その中には発行年が西暦で刻まれており、さらにその上部には当コインの発行地であるボンベイの地名が刻まれています。</p>\r\n
