<p>時は19世紀前半、植民地主義を推進する英国は次々と領土を獲得し、全世界に版図を広げつつありました。当時破竹の勢いで快進撃を展開していた英国にとってインドとの貿易は必要不可欠なものであり、現地での取引に使用される目的で発行されたのがモハール金貨であり、ヴィクトリア女王の治世下に発行されたものと、それよりも若干古いウィリアム4世時代のもののみが英国貨幣史上に記録されています。アンティークコインのコレクターの中でも特にヴィクトリア期のコインの熱心なコレクターの間で大変高い人気を誇るモハール金貨ですが、その理由は諸説ありです。まず第一の理由としては、ヴィクトリア期を代表する天才彫刻家にして当時のロイヤルミント彫刻部門の主任を務めたウィリアム・ワイオン（1795年－１851年）のデザインによるものであることが挙げられます。表面の肖像は言わずと知れた「ヤング・ヘッド」の愛称で知られている18歳の時の女王の秀麗なポートレートであり、英国貨幣史上の真の伝説に数えられるべき価値を持つものです。裏面のデザインもまた見るものに強い印象を与えるもので、力強いライオンが英国を象徴していることは言うまでもなく、背後のヤシの木は勝利や名声を暗示していると伝えられています。これらは空前の繁栄を謳歌していたヴィクトリア朝中期以降の大英帝国を象徴するものであり、英国が使用する貿易用通貨に描かれるには最適のデザインであったことは間違いありません。そして第2の理由としては、コレクターの蒐集意欲を掻き立てるに十分なデザイン上のバリエーションの豊富さが挙げられます。ヴィクトリア女王の治世初となった1841年版モハール金貨のデザイン別のタイプのみに絞った場合でも、多くの異なるバージョンの存在が確認されています。女王の左向きのポートレートのみを取っても2種類があり、通常の若々しく描かれた「ヤング・ヘッド」に加えて、「フォックスタイプ」と称する鋭角的なフェースラインを特徴とするものも見受けられます。また周囲の碑文も大きく分けて2種類あり、左右対称に刻まれた「ディヴァイデッド」タイプや、連続的に文字が刻まれた「コンティニュアス」タイプなどがあり、コレクターの興味を刺激する重要な要素となっています。</p>\r\n
