<p>英国国家を象徴する女性像として約2000年間もの長きにわたって親しまれ続けて来たブリタニア像。その源流は古代ローマ時代、現在のグレートブリテン島がかつてローマ帝国の属州であった時代にさかのぼります。「アルビオン」と呼ばれていた当時のグレートブリテン島ですが、想像力豊かなローマ人たちはこの島を女神に喩え、同じ名前を冠するようになります。また紀元3世紀頃には帝国内で使用される流通貨に初めてブリタニアが描かれるようになりますが、帝国の属州であったグレートブリテン島においてこの通貨が採用された時こそが、英国貨幣史上におけるブリタニアの初登場とされています。それ以降、海洋覇権国家として急成長を遂げる英国を象徴するかのように、手に三又の槍トライデントを携えた女戦士へと変貌を遂げます。ローマ帝国の繁栄と共に創造されたブリタニアでしたが、5世紀頃から始まる衰退期の訪れと共にコイン上から姿を消すことになります。ローマ人たちの撤退後に島を支配したのは北方から南下してきたアングロサクソン人たちでしたが、その入植と共にブリタニアは一旦完全に過去のものとなります。その後も造形芸術分野においては度々姿を現していたブリタニアですが、とりわけ海運国家として隆盛を極めていたエリザベス1世の治世下においてはイングランドの象徴として再び取り挙げられるようになります。しかしブリタニアが英国貨幣上に完全復活を果たすのは17世紀に王政復古を成就したチャールズ2世の治世下においてであり、1672年に発行されたブリタニアを描くこの初のコインは、その後、英国コインデザインの主要な題材として定着するこの女神像の近世における記念すべきデビューとなりました。発行された銅貨に描かれていたブリタニア像は女戦士というよりはどちらかというと威厳のある女神としての表情を湛えたもので、その後の各王朝時代に繰り返し描かれ、愛され続けたデザインの原点としての価値を見出すことが可能です。ステュアート王朝とジョージ王朝時代の歴代国王のためのコインの裏面に描かれ、その威厳のある姿によって注目を集め続けていたブリタニアですが、19世紀のヴィクトリア女王の治世下において、世界に版図を広げる大英帝国の頂点に君臨する女王を象徴する表象としてのブリタニアがコインのデザインとして度々起用されたことは決して偶然ではありませんでした。</p>\r\n

<h2>英国君主の威厳と限りなき女性美に捧げられる意匠を刻む2014年度版ブリタニアコイン</h2>\r\n

<p>2014年に英国貨幣の発行元であるロイヤルミントがデザインした当ブリタニア500ポンド5オンス金貨は、21世紀に生きるブリタニアの国際性を強調するデザインによって不変の価値を有するものです。チャールズ2世の治世下の1672年にブリタニア像がコイン上に復活してからはや300年以上の時が経過していますが、1980年代以降、世界を魅了し続けている一連のブリタニアコインは、現代的で洗練された魅力的なデザインもさることながらゴールドを始めとするマテリアルと種々のサイズのラインアップによって熱狂的なコインマニアのみならず英国コインのファンの注目を集め続けて来ました。当2014年度版の裏面に描かれているブリタニアは頭上にコリント式の兜を戴き、両手にはトライデントと盾を携えた典型的なブリタニアが描かれていますが、ほぼ8頭身に近い絶妙なプロポーションは女神の崇高性を強調すると共に永遠の女性美の極致を表出していると言えます。ブリタニアの足元に跪く大きなライオンは、ヴィクトリア期のコインの傑作「ウナとライオン」を想起させるものであり、このコイン最大の注目点となっています。さらにその背後には大きな地球が描かれており、かつて地球の陸地面積の大半を収めた大英帝国を思わせる広大なる世界が広がっています。元来海を象徴する存在であるブリタニアですが、ここではそれのみならず、大英帝国の仮の姿であるイギリス連合王国の象徴である英国君主を想起させます。そしてコインの表面を見てみますと、現英国女王エリザベス2世の荘厳なる絵姿が裏面の意匠の正統性を物語っているかの如く、その微笑みと共に圧倒的存在感を誇示しています。英国を代表する彫刻家イアン・ランク・ブロードリーの大作であり、普遍的なコイン肖像の傑作でもあるこの「エリザベス女王の第4肖像」は、70代に差し掛かった英国女王の崇高な面持ちを写実的に描く英国貨幣史上の奇跡であると言っても過言ではありません。女王の頭上に輝くのは、英国王室屈指の秘宝「大英帝国とアイルランドの少女たちのティアラ」です。女王が最も愛する宝飾品としても知られているこの名品は、かつてヴィクトリア期に後のジョージ5世とメアリー王妃の婚礼に際してアイルランドの女性活動団体が基金を募って王妃に献上したもので、その後、1947年に現女王が夫のフィリップ殿下との婚礼に際して祖母のメアリー王妃から受け継いだものとされています。ハイレリーフ仕様が浮き彫りにするコイン表裏のデザインはどちらも英国君主の威厳と優美極まりない女性美に捧げられるものであり、当金貨に生命力溢れる存在感を与え、見るものを恍惚とさせる表現力を併せ持ちます。</p>\r\n
