<p>有史以来最大の国家として古代世界を牽引したローマは、それまでの地図を塗り替えるほど広範囲にわたって勢力を拡大していました。そして紀元220年頃に現在のグレートブリテン島への入植を開始し、島を「ブリタニア」と名付けました。そして想像力豊かなローマ人たちによって生みだされたのが、その後約2000年間にわたって擬人化された米国そのものと評されてきた女神ブリタニアでした。偶然島と同じ名を与えられたブリタニアは島の守護神として崇められていましたが、6世紀以降はローマの衰退とともに徐々に忘れ去られるようになります。次のアングロサクソン人たちはローマの影響を受けることのない独自の文化を持った民族でしたので、ブリタニアが復活するのには中世期を待たなければなりませんでした。その後、英国は大航海時代を迎え、特にエリザベス1世の時代には海運国家として繁栄を謳歌し国家の守護神として重用されるとともに、女性の君主としてイングランドに君臨したエリザベス1世のシンボルとして堂々たる復活を果たしました。それ以降、今日に至るまで、ブリタニアは女戦士として描写されることが多く、古代ギリシャのコリント式の兜を頭上に戴き、両手には三又の槍トライデントとユニオンジャックの盾を携えた姿で描かれ続けています。それぞれの時代特有のスタイルによってその後も若干の変更が加えられることはありましたが、19世紀初頭頃にはおおむね現在見られるような姿に改められるに至りました。古くから文芸の世界にて時折姿を現していたブリタニアでしたが、英国貨幣上に描かれるようになるのはずっと後のことで、チャールズ2世による王政復古後の1672年、ファージング銅貨の裏面のデザインとして採用されたのが伝説の始まりでした。古代ローマ時代の流通貨にも描かれていたブリタニアでしたが、17世紀になってようやく満を持しての英国貨幣界デビューが実現したと言えます。その時ファージング銅貨に描かれていたブリタニア像は、優美な女神と言うよりかは幾分厳めしく威圧的な印象を受けるもので、それも座像として描かれている点が最大の特徴でした。その後も歴代王朝を代表する貨幣に頻繁に描かれ続けたブリタニアは、時の流れと共に徐々に女神としての女性美が強調されるようになり、今日コインコレクターの間で共通の認識となっているような力強さと繊細優美な趣が同居する独特の表情を見せるようになりました。</p>\n

<h2>英国地金型コインの最高傑作の世紀の大珍品の突然の登場</h2>\n

<p>古代以来、英国人の心のよりどころとされてきたブリタニア像。17世紀の英国コイン界におけるデビューは、その後歴代王朝のためのコイン上で快進撃を続けることになるこの永遠のヒロインの運命を決定づけました。20世紀以降のブリタニアの活躍には目を見張るものがありますが、中でも1987年に初登場となったブリタニア地金型金貨は、この種のコインの最高傑作であるばかりか、ブリタニアを描く英国貨幣の代表作として現代のスタンダードを確立しています。毎年発表される金貨・銀貨を含めた多彩なラインアップは、永遠の主題としての真価を発揮する一種のみのデザインによって統一されており、コイン上における英国のもう一つの顔としての役割を果たしています。今回ご紹介させていただくコインは、前英国王エリザベス2世の治世末期から2023年初頭まで発行されていたブリタニア地金型金貨の限定版です。現在、表面の肖像は新国王チャールズ3世の公式第1肖像に置き換えられていますが、当コインには非常に人気の高かった「エリザベス2世の第5公式肖像」が見られます。女王の頭上には、19世紀前半の英国王ジョージ4世ゆかりの宝飾品「ステートダイアモンドダイアデム」が煌めいています。上から見ますと僅か19センチ程度のサークレットの周囲には1333個ものダイアモンドとイエローダイアモンドが所狭しとちりばめられていて圧巻です。サークレットの中央にドーム型の本体を挿入しますと王冠になるこのダイアデムはエリザベス2世お気に入りの宝冠として、存命中はメディアに登場する機会が最も多く、流通貨を含めた英国コインのための公式肖像としては第3肖像と第5肖像に描かれていたために強い印象を残しました。「女王の時代に英国は繁栄を極める」というジンクスが残っていますが、エリザベス2世治世下の1987年に発表されたこのブリタニアのデザインは、それから37年の時を経た現在もなお英国地金型コインの最高峰としての存在感を発揮しています。現代ロイヤルミントを代表するデザイナーフィリップ・ネイサンが創造したこのブリタニアの立像を描くデザインは、波打ち際に佇む永遠のヒロインの美観を最大限に引き延ばした大作でもあります。そして今回ご紹介のコインは、エリザベス2世の治世下に発行された最後の500点のうちの一枚に該当する世紀の逸品であり、記念コイン的な性格ゆえに高鑑定結果が付されている珍品中の珍品です。女王の時代最後の一枚を手に、古代ローマへの憧憬を胸に抱く格別な贅沢をご堪能ください。</p>
