<p>海外オークションで取り挙げられる度に具体的な数字によって世界を驚嘆させ、 またその力強い美しさによって歴史的な英国貨幣界全体に精彩をもたらす<strong>1839年発行の5ポンド金貨「ウナとライオン」</strong>。 1837年に即位した稀代の女王ヴィクトリアは、その年、即位3周年を迎えましたが、 それに敬意を表するロイヤルミントによって新たに制作されたのがこの「ウナとライオン」の異名を取る古今東西の最高傑作でした。 総発行枚数僅か400枚ほどとされるその驚異的な希少性によって、その後、約2世紀にわたって英国貨幣の顔としての役割を果たしてきた不朽の名作です。 表面には「ヤングヘッド」の愛称によって知られる、<strong>ヴィクトリア女王の公式第1コイン肖像</strong>が描かれており、裏面の「ウナとライオン」との絶妙な対比を見せています。 この英国貨幣の傑作中の傑作の創造主は、19世紀初頭の英国貨幣界に君臨した真に偉大なる彫刻家、ウィリアム・ワイオン（1795-1851）その人でした。 高名なコイン彫刻家一族の末裔として生まれたワイオンは、その持てる才能の限りを傾けて、女王の肖像が描かれたこの新作の裏面を輝かせようと考えました。 19世紀初頭の英国で主流をなしていた芸術様式であった新古典様式の大家であったジョン・フラックスマンの知己を得て、 同様式を存分に吸収したワイオンは、この「ウナとライオン」にてその成果を十全に披露しました。しかし、興味深いことに、 デザインの主題となった題材を同時代の作品から引用せず、数世紀前のエリザベス朝時代を代表する<strong style="background-color:#fffad7;">文学者エドマンド・スペンサーの傑作叙事詩「妖精の女王」</strong>に材を求めた点は、 実にワイオンの時空を超越した独創性の成せる業であったとしか思えません。ウナを大英帝国の女主人公ヴィクトリア女王に、 またウナに付き従うライオンを帝国全土の臣民に見立てるというその奇想天外なアイデアによって、このコイン版「ウナとライオン」が永遠の生命を得ることになろうとは、 その当時誰も知る由もなかったことでしょう。2019年にこの英国貨幣デザインの金字塔は、人気モダンコインシリーズ「偉大なる彫刻家シリーズ」の第1弾として歴史上初めて復刻されましたが、 名デザインならではのカリスマ性溢れる感動によって、21世紀のコレクターを十全に魅了し、英国貨幣の最高峰としての堂々たる威厳をモダンコイン上にて誇示しました。 またこのリマスター版の解禁によって、1839年発行のオリジナルが再び脚光を浴びたことは疑いようのない事実であり、 近年、欧米の主要オークションに出品される際には常に天文学的な落札額を更新しており、オリジナルならではの色褪せることのない絶対感をアピールして、 オークションに熱気と興奮をもたらしています。</p>\n
