<p>現英国女王エリザベス2世の在位70周年「プラチナジュビリー」を祝す2022年は、女王自身と英国王室の前人未到の偉業を歴史に刻む格別の一年です。1952年の即位以来、常に国民に寄り添い、イギリス連合王国と連邦各国のために尽力を惜しまず、精力的な活動を展開して来たエリザベス女王。「私は、それが長くとも短くとも、全人生をこの偉大なる国家に捧げます」と声高らかに国民に宣言した女王は、その時、未だ21歳になったばかりでした。そしてその神聖な誓いは、その後70年間にわたって守り抜かれました。正に全世界を駆け巡る公務を展開した女王がこの地上に蒔いた種は、70年の時を経て花を咲かせ、今や全世界がその恩恵にあずかっていると言っても過言ではないほどです。父王ジョージ6世の崩御に従い、遠きアフリカはケニアの地にて英国の女王として即位された女王は、翌1953年にロンドンのウェストミンスター寺院において戴冠式を挙行され、名実ともに英国の君主となられました。過去70年間の英国の歴史を振り返るとき、国家の象徴としてのみならず、いかに女王の存在抜きにしてその全貌を語ることが不可能であるかを痛感するに至ります。去る6月には英国民が挙って待ち望んだ「プラチナジュビリー」の公式行事が開催されたばかりですが、残念ながら女王自身は体調不良を理由にそれらの行事を欠席されました。96歳の高齢を考慮しますとこれは致し方のないことですが、その後、ウィンザー城の庭で乗馬を楽しまれる女王の姿がニュースで取り挙げられ、全世界が安堵するに至ったことがごく最近の記憶として残っています。</p>\r\n

<p>エリザベス2世のプラチナジュビリー一色の2022年に英国貨幣の本拠であるロイヤルミントが世界に贈る当コインは、話題のコインシリーズ「女王の治世」の第2弾として満を持して解禁されたものです。「栄誉と叙勲」のタイトルの下に記念すべき第1弾を飾った当シリーズですが、今回の第2弾「奉仕と支援」もまたエリザベス2世の70年間に及ぶ長期在位を象徴する充実した内容ゆえに注目を集めることでしょう。前作においては、国家の象徴として栄典の授与に携わる女王の公的な役割がクローズアップされましたが、今回は過去70年間のあいだに女王が公務として遂行して来た慈善事業とそれらの団体に対する女王のパトロンとしての役割に焦点を当てるものです。そしてそれは裏面のデザインに顕著であり、女王の存在抜きにしては語ることのできない宗教儀式である「洗足木曜日」に関連する「洗足下賜金＝Maundy money」が取り挙げられています。伝統的なキリスト教社会においては、復活祭前の一週間を特別とする習慣があり、その中でも同週木曜日からの三日間は特に重要視され、特別なミサや礼拝が行われて来ました。この木曜日は、イエスキリストと使徒たちが最後の晩餐を行った日とされ、その席でイエスがへりくだって弟子たちの足を洗ったという記述が福音書にかかれているため、「洗足木曜日」の呼称が誕生したと伝えられています。イングランド国教会においては復活祭前の聖金曜日の前日の洗足木曜日に「王室洗足式＝ロイヤル・モーンディー」という名称の下に行われる宗教儀式がこれに当たります。儀式の最中に英国君主、もしくはそれに準ずる高位王族によって参列者に配られる小型の銀貨は「洗足日下賜金＝モーンディー・マネー」と呼ばれ、儀式の小道具として重要な役割を担っています。当コイン裏面には「奉仕と支援」のタイトルの下に、女王が過去に主催した数々の公的活動を象徴するモーンディー・マネーのデザイン両面が写実的に描かれています。会場にて女王から直接下賜されるモーンディー・マネーですが、その表面には今も「ヤング・ヤング・ヘッド」として知られている若き日の女王の「第1肖像」が刻まれています。純銀の配合率の関係上、流通貨に分類されないモーンディー・マネーですが、記念コインとして取り扱われることもある点に文化的本質を見出すことができます。4月21日に御年96歳を迎えられた女王陛下ですが、残念ながら本年度のロイヤル・モーンディーへの女王の参列は叶いませんでした。女王の名代として式に参列したのはチャールズ皇太子と妻のコーンウォール公爵夫人カミラで、次期王位継承権保持者としての存在感を会場にて存分にアピールして注目を集めていました。そしてこのコイン裏面のもう一つの特記事項として挙げられるものはモーンディーマネーのデザインの下部に記されている女王の手書きの署名です。これもまた英国君主としての女王の役割と、個人と団体を含む他者への女王の承認を暗示する表象として、コイン上に効果的な重厚感をもたらしています。アイルランド出身のイラストレーター、P.J.リンチによるこの優れたデザインは、齢96歳を迎えた女王の70年間にわたる国家への献身に対する讃辞として、今後もモダンコインの代表作として英国貨幣界に君臨し続けることでしょう。</p>
