<h2>英国王室とともに300年以上もの歴史を見届けてきたバッキンガム宮殿</h2>\r\n

<p>現在も英国王室の公式な宮殿としてロンドン市内に存在するバッキンガム宮殿。その歴史は古く、1703年に英国の名門貴族バッキンガム公爵ジョン・シェフィールドが自らの邸宅を建設する目的で広大な桑畑を購入した時にさかのぼります。当初は煉瓦のみを用いて建設された非常に簡素な邸宅にしか過ぎませんでしたが、1760年に新国王として即位したジョージ3世がその翌年に公爵家から譲渡された時に正式に王室の所有となりました。当時バッキンガム・ハウスと呼ばれていたこの館は、ジョージ3世がシャーロット王妃と子供たちとともに週末を過ごすためのみに用いられていました。しかし、王室所有の居住空間として継続的に用いられるには多少不便で手狭であったとのことです。1820年にジョージ3世が崩御すると、それまで国王を補佐していた摂政王太子ジョージはジョージ4世として即位しましたが、それとほぼ同時期に、王室が所有するようになって以降初の大改築が行われました。19世紀初頭の英国を代表する名建築家ジョン・ナッシュの助言を元に宮殿を現在我々が目の当たりにする姿へと改めたことは、ひとえにジョージ4世の並外れた審美眼の成せる技であったと言えます。1825年に始まったジョージ4世の治世下における宮殿の大改築は、その後12年かけてそれまでのルネッサンス様式の外観からネオクラシック様式へと改められました。しかし、ジョージ4世自身は、全く異なる建物として改築された後の宮殿の変貌ぶりを見届けることなく1830年に崩御しました。それまではセント・ジェームズ宮殿と並んで、王室が所有する宮殿群の一つでしかなかったバッキンガム宮殿でしたが、1837年のヴィクトリア女王の即位をきっかけとして、国王が実際に政務を行う公の場となりました。1850年には正面の東棟が増築され、中庭を挟んで四角形の構造となり、1913年には宮殿正面の改装に伴いバルコニーが新設されました。例年、夏の2か月間のみ一般公開される宮殿内部ですが、君主のプライベートな居住空間以外の公式な18部屋（ステートルーム）のみの公開ではあるものの、壁面を埋め尽くす古今東西の名画（フェルメールやカナレット等の著名な画家の油彩画を含みます）が来訪者を感動で包みます。ジョージ3世の個人的な収集物がコレクションの大半を占めていることからも、生前の王の類まれなる美意識を伺い知ることが可能です。</p>\r\n
