<p>過去約2000年間にわたって擬人化された英国そのものと称され、受け継がれてきた永遠の女神ブリタニア。その源流を辿りますと古代ローマ時代にさかのぼります。史上初の巨大帝国を築き上げたローマ人たちが、有り余る独創性と想像力を結集して生み出したのが国家の象徴たる女神ブリタニアでした。紀元200年を過ぎたころにローマの属州となって急速に発展を遂げた現在のグレートブリテン島。ローマ時代以前は「アルビオン」と呼ばれていたこの島は、ローマ人たちによって「ブリタニア」の名を冠せられ、島の守護神である女神もまた偶然にも同じ名を与えられました。それ以降、英国の化身として崇められてきたブリタニアでしたが、紀元5世紀ごろから顕著となったローマ帝国の衰退とともに次第に忘れ去られるようになります。次のアングロサクソン人による島の支配下には殆ど姿を見せなかったブリタニアですが、中世期になりますと再び文献上にて時折取り挙げられるようになります。そしてルネッサンス期には、大航海時代に海運国家として繁栄を極めた英国の海の象徴として改めて頻繁に描写されるようになります。とりわけエリザベス1世時代の英国にとってのブリタニアは、女王の時代ということもあり、国家を象徴する海運の守護神として重用されていたようです。しかし英国貨幣上にブリタニアが描かれるようになるのはずっと後のことで、17世紀のチャールズ2世の時代を待たなければなりませんでした。王政復古から12年目の年、つまり1672年に発行されたファージング銅貨には女戦士としてのブリタニアの座像が描かれていましたが、これによってブリタニアは英国貨幣界における満を持してのデビューを果たしたと言えるかもしれません。古代ローマの属領であった時代のブリテンではローマの貨幣が流通していた時代があり、これも英国貨幣史の一部と見なされていますが、この1672年のファージング銅貨のリリースによってブリタニアの英国貨幣界での方向性が決定したと言っても過言ではないでしょう。その後、ブリタニアは歴代君主の治世を代表するコイン上に描かれることになりますが、後に手に持つ槍が三又の槍「トライデント」に置き換えられるようになるなど若干の改良が加えられ、現在我々が知るブリタニア像の原型を生み出します。そして20世紀後半の1987年にはロイヤルミントによる地金型金貨が解禁となり、その秀逸なデザイン性によってますます存在感を発揮するようになります。波打ち際に佇む優美な姿はその後のブリタニアのスタンダードと見なされるようになり、その絶大な人気ゆえに、今日、地金型コインの最高傑作としての評価を確立しています。</p>\r\n
