<p>ゲルマニア（Germania）は、ドイツ国家またはドイツ国民全体を擬人化する女性像として知られています。19世紀初頭のロマン主義の台頭によって普遍化したゲルマニアですが、後の「1848年革命」の頃には造形芸術の諸作品上において頻繁に描写され、また後年のドイツ帝国時代にも国家を象徴する存在としてたびたび紹介されていました。ヨーロッパ諸国において女神像や女性像が国家を象徴する例は多く、このゲルマニアも例外ではありません。イギリスにはブリタニアが存在しますが、これはグレートブリテン島が古代ローマの属領であった時代にローマ人たちが生み出した島の守護神としての女性像で、女戦士の姿で描かれ人気を集めました。またフランスにはマリアンヌという革命的な女性像が存在し、こちらも国家の統一的なシンボルとして、機会あるごとに歴史の表舞台に姿を現してきました。これらに対して、ドイツのそれはゲルマニアであり、神性は兼ね備えてはいないものの、より地上的な意味での国家の象徴として広く認知されています。ゲルマニアは、カロリング朝の初代ローマ皇帝のカール大帝が所有していたとされる「ジュワユーズ」という名の名剣を携えた姿で描写されることが一般的です。また時に神聖ローマ帝国の宝冠を頭上に戴いていたりすることもあります。その他、甲冑で身を固めていたり、赤みがかった金髪をなびかせながら金地に黒の鷲が描かれた盾や胸当てを掲げて登場することもあります。それぞれの時代の国旗と共に描かれることもゲルマニアを巡る演出の特色であり、いかにこの女性像が国家を象徴する存在であるか、またそれを強調することが文化的に意義の深いことであると見なされているかが分かります。1871年以前の図像では、自由主義の黒・赤・金の3色からなるドイツ国旗を掲げていたゲルマニアでしたが、同年にドイツ帝国が成立したことにより、黒・白・赤からなるドイツ帝国の国旗がそれに置き換えられることになります。またこれら以外にもゲルマニアの属性とされる要素は数多くあり、それぞれが深い象徴性を有しています。ゲルマニアの頭上には通常樫の葉の冠が掲げられていますが、これは彼女の英雄性を物語っているとされています。英雄といいますと通常は男性の属性であることが一般的ですが、敢えて女性像をそのように脚色することによって国家のシンボルとしての並々ならぬ重厚感を表出することに成功しています。ゲルマニアの足元にはしばしば砕けた鎖が見られますが、これは束縛からの解放を意味するもので、ドイツの近代自由主義国家としての在り方を指し示しているといえます。前述の剣の周囲には植物の枝が巻きつけられていますが、これはオリーブの若枝で、平和を祈念する意思の表れと見ることができます。ゲルマニアの背後に見られる朝日の光線は、新時代の始まりを意味するもので、ゲルマニアによって開拓される新たな国家を暗示しています。そして彼女の背景によく描かれる川と城のある風景は、フランスとドイツの国境にあるライン川流域を見事に象徴しています。今回ご紹介させていただくコインは、ゲルマニアをテーマとする2023年度版5マルク1オンス地金型銀貨です。コイン表面には長い髪をなびかせて歩を進める野生的な女戦士としてのゲルマニア像が描かれています。これほどまでにコイン上に力強く描かれた国家の象徴は中々見かけることができないものです。コイン裏面にはドイツ語圏でよく見かける「双頭の鷲」の紋章が掲げられています。コイン表裏にドイツ国家の精神性を象徴する意匠を描く当コインは、ドイツの歴史と共に歩んできたゲルマニアに捧げられる重厚な地金型コインの最新作です。</p>
