<p>英国ハノーヴァー朝の第3代国王ジョージ3世の三男として誕生したウィリアム4世。繊細な美意識の持ち主として脚光を浴び、宮廷生活を華麗に彩った先王で兄のジョージ4世の治世とは対照的に、実直で質実剛健な性質で知られていた王の治世は、僅か7年間と極めて短かったものの、後の大英帝国造営の過渡期として英国の国益に適ったものでした。一般庶民に向けられる王の温かい眼差しは、実際に国民生活を飛躍的に改善するに足る行動力を伴う強靭な意志の力を見せる時もありました。特に未成年の過剰な労働や教育機会の欠如から起こる種々の問題に対する王独自の判断による改革は、後のヴィクトリア期以降の問題解決の規範となったことは確かであり、それゆえに英国にとっての永遠の恩人としての王の歴史上における存在感は絶大です。13歳の時に士官候補生として英国海軍に入隊するも、王族であるために特別扱いされることを好まなかったとされるウィリアム4世ですが、強靭な精神の持ち主であり軍務にも忠実であった王は、数々の歴史的な戦闘に参加して武勲を立てます。一例を挙げますと、1780年にはサン・ビセンテ岬の月光の海戦に参加してスペイン艦隊撃破を体験します。またアメリカ独立戦争の際にはニューヨークにて軍務についていたことから、アメリカ合衆国を訪問した初の英国王として歴史上に名を刻みます。軍務を退いた後、近い将来王位を継承することが確実視されるようになると、それまで相思相愛の仲で同棲していた女優のドロシー・ジョーダンと別れ、1818年にはザクセン＝マイニンゲン公ゲオルク1世の娘アデレードと正式に結婚します。アデレード王妃との間に子供が生まれることは無かったものの、ジョーダンとの間に生まれた大勢の子供たち全員を王室側が引き取る決断を下したのは心優しき王自身でした。そのような王にとって、大勢いる子供たちの養育を厭わず、常に家庭的なアデレード王妃のような女性は願ってもない存在でした。1830年には長兄ジョージ4世の崩御に伴って王位を継承し、新国王ウィリアム4世として即位します。ハノーヴァー朝次代のヴィクトリア女王が王にとって姪に当たるため、幼少時よりことのほか可愛がり、女王が成人して即位が可能となるまで生き永らえることを何よりも願っていたとされています。そして在位から7年目の年、1837年に、ヴィクトリア女王の18歳の誕生日を見届けた後、その波乱の生涯を閉じます。</p>\r\n

<p>ヴィクトリア女王の治世下の19世紀中盤以降に有史以来最大の国家として大成した大英帝国ですが、ウィリアム4世の僅か7年間の治世はその過渡期としての重要性を内包していたと言えます。今回ご紹介させていただく2モハール銀貨は、王の治世下の1835年に英領インドで発行された希少価値の高いアンティークコインの逸品です。1600年から1947年まで、約350年間もの長きにわたってインドにおける貨幣発行権を独占していたイギリス東インド会社ですが、この銀貨はその最盛期に発行されたものとして注目に値します。通貨単位としての「モハール」の名は、英領インドを始め、かつてのムガール帝国、ネパール王国、またペルシャやアフガニスタンにおいて製造され、使用されていた法定通貨に与えられた呼称として貨幣史上に記録されています。その当時、1モハールは基本的には15シルバー・ルピーと等価とされ、英領インドにおいては第一次世界大戦後の1918年まで製造されていました。上記の地域にて広範囲・長期間にわたって製造されていたモハール貨ですが、中でも英領インドのそれはデザインの秀逸性と希少価値によって人気が高く、英国貨幣界においては常に第一級のコレクターズアイテムの扱いとなっています。中でもヴィクトリア朝を象徴する女王の「ヤングヘッド」を描くモハール金貨は、名匠ウィリアム・ワイオンのデザインを元に制作されたものであることから今でも特に高い人気を誇っています。しかし、この銀貨表面に描かれているハノーヴァー朝の先代ウィリアム4世の右向きポートレートもまた、ワイオンのキャリア初期の傑作として知られるものであり、裏面のライオンとヤシの木の意匠と共に発行当時の英領インドの歴史的背景を彷彿させる要素によって不変の価値を有します。金貨が主流であったウィリアム4世治世下の英領インドで発行されたモハール貨ですが、銀貨はごく僅かしか発行された形跡がありません。その上、当モハール銀貨は「ダブル・モハール」と呼ばれ、額面価値が30ルピーと等価という例外的なものです。大英帝国への過渡期を象徴するこの世紀の大珍品は、現代に残された限りなく唯一無二の例として、英国コインの精髄を極めた真に偉大なるコレクションに輝きをもたらすこと請け合いです。稀少性と優れた審美性を併せ持つ確実な実物資産として、コインコレクターの輝かしい未来を約束することでしょう。</p>
