<p>現在世界第2位の大国として邁進し続ける中華人民共和国。とりわけ21世紀以降の同国の経済成長には目を見張るものがありますが、過去5000年以上の歴史を有する大国としての同国の魅力はそれのみにとどまりません。中国が創造した多種多様な文化は、それぞれの王朝がその究極の精華として生み出したものですが、それらは今日、中国文明として総括されています。そしてそれが如何にして現在までの人類の発展に寄与してきたかという点が再認識される時代が到来しました。まさにその渦中にあるこの新しい世紀ですが、中国の現代の繁栄と過去の伝統を同時に表現するものとして動物のパンダが取り挙げられる機会が増えつつあります。中華人民共和国造幣局が発行するいわゆるパンダコインは、その最もストレートな表現手段として、過去40年以上にわたって国家の魅力を世界に発信し続けてきました。1982年の初登場以降、全世界のコイン投資家やコレクターに支持されてきたパンダコインですが、その後は1種類のみならずバリエーション豊富なパンダのデザインをコイン表面に描き、空前の大成功を収めました。1頭のみ、あるいは複数の親パンダや子パンダが描かれたものまで多種多様ですが、そのどれもが中国の正の遺産を反映するものであり、あらゆる角度から見て好感が持てるものです。実際にパンダが生息する地理的な範囲は意外と狭く、中国南部からベトナムにかけての気候が温暖な地帯に生息します。中国以外でのパンダの歴史は意外と浅く、特に西欧諸国で本物のパンダが広く認識されるようになるのは第2次世界大戦後のことでした。それまではアライグマに類似するパンダとは全く関係のない動物が「レッサーパンダ」と名付けられ、パンダの一種とされていた時代もありました。戦後、共産主義国家として新たなスタートを切った中国は、パンダを貸し出すことによって新たな国家のイメージの向上を図る計画を立てます。これは「パンダ外交」と呼ばれる一種の外交手段として知られていますが、パンダの魅力ゆえに実際に功を奏しているようです。我が国日本にも過去に2頭の中国産ジャイアントパンダ、カンカンとランランが、1972年9月に締結された日中国交正常化の返礼として贈呈され、東京の上野動物園で飼育されていた時期がありました。今や世界的な人気を誇るパンダですが、コインの世界においても重要な役割を果たし続けてきました。今回ご紹介させていただく作品は、2015年から2024年にかけて中華人民共和国造幣局が発行した10元30グラム地金型銀貨仕様のパンダ銀貨10枚セットです。コイン表面には、この期間に発表された個々のかわいらしい親パンダや子パンダの意匠が施されており、パンダコインの過去を回顧する貴重な年代記の感が強いものです。地金型コインでありながらも毎年異なるデザインによって注目を集めるこのパンダシリーズには、収集する側であるコレクターの興味が反映されており、コレクションの対象としての魅力が尽きません。コイン裏面には、1982年の初登場以来、一貫して同コインの裏面を飾ってきた中国北京市に存在する世界遺産「天壇」が描かれています。明王朝の最盛期を体現した第3代皇帝永楽帝によって創建されたと伝えられる天壇は、その壮大なスケールと外観的美質によって北京随一の観光スポットとなっています。現在は北京市民の憩いの場としても活用されていますが、元は明・清両王朝の歴代皇帝の霊廟として建立されたものでした。当コインセットは全10種の異なるデザインを網羅している点も圧巻ですが、一つ一つのコインに描かれた愛くるしいパンダを観察するだけでも心が和むはずです。当作品は、あらゆる角度から伝統的な中国の魅力を表現するコインによる文化遺産に他なりません。</p>
