<p>1986年11月24日の初リリース以降、世界中のコインコレクターと投資家を魅了し続けてきたアメリカ合衆国造幣局の代表作「アメリカン・シルバー・イーグル」。今日顕著なその絶大な人気は、コイン表面の名デザイン「ウォーキング・リバティー」の精緻な美しさに依るところが大きいのではないでしょうか。その源流は「ウォーキング・リバティー・ハーフ・ドル」と呼ばれる名高いコインの表面を飾っていた作品で、コインそのものは1916年から1947年まで流通していました。20世紀初頭のアメリカを代表するコインデザイナー、アドルフ・A・ヴァインマンによるこの夢幻美を湛えた例外的な意匠は、数あるアメリカコインのデザインの中でも一際完成度の高い作品として観るものに崇高感を抱かせます。ちょうどこの作品が発表される数年前から、アメリカ合衆国造幣局内では既存の貨幣のデザイン全てを一新するという案が表面化していました。当時の造幣局長であったロバート・W・ウーリーが中心となって推進したこの急進的なプロジェクトは、1892年以降、長年にわたって受け継がれていた旧来のコインデザインを一挙に更新することによってアメリカ貨幣界そのものを改革しようと試みたことがきっかけでした。その第一歩として、ウーリーはアメリカ合衆国美術委員会に新規デザイン選定のためのコンクールの開催を依頼します。その結果として選ばれたのがヴァインマンの新作「ウォーキング・リバティー」でした。左側に描かれた大きな太陽に向かって進む女神の気高い姿は芸術性と完成度の高さによって各界からの称賛を獲得しましたが、その緻密な描写ゆえに流通貨としてのコイン上に再現するには多くの困難を抱えていたことも事実です。造幣局の首脳陣は何とかこの作品特有の立体性を活かそうとあらゆる角度からの再現を試みましたが、30年以上にわたって試行錯誤を重ねにもかかわらず結局成果は得られず、当時のコイン製造技術の限界を知るに至りました。完成度の高さゆえに一流のコイン芸術としての魅力を十全に発揮することなく終わったオリジナル「ウォーキング・リバティー」ですが、アメリカを代表する著名な歴史家コーネリウス・ヴァーミュールは、この作品をアメリカ貨幣界における最も美しい作品としてこよなく愛し、終始高く評価していました。そして20世紀も後半に差し掛かった1986年、同作品はオリジナルデザインの魅力はそのままに若干の修正が加えられることにより再び目を見ることになります。同年に発表された「アメリカン・シルバー・イーグル」の表面のデザインとしてリマスターされ、現代アメリカ合衆国造幣局が総力を結集した革新的な技術力によって遂にヴァインマンの理想に到達することが叶いました。今回ご紹介させていただくコインは1ドル1オンス「アメリカン・シルバー・イーグル」の2010年度版です。コイン表面には「ウォーキング・リバティー」の新装版が描かれていますが、20世紀初頭のオリジナルと比較しますと、改めて同作品ならではの繊細さがクローズアップされているのは一目瞭然で、コイン芸術としての独創性を感じずにはいられません。そしてコイン裏面ですが、表題通りの定番のイーグルの意匠が描かれています。ただこちらは2種あるアメリカン・イーグルのデザインの内の最初のもので、1986年の初発行から2021年まで35年間にわたって同銀貨の裏面を飾っていた作品です。そこに描かれているのは最新版のような写実的なイーグルの姿ではなく、イーグルを紋章学上の動物として捉えた格調の高い意匠です。この作品の創造者は、アメリカ合衆国造幣局の第12代主任彫刻師を歴任した現代屈指のアーティストとして知られるジョン・マーカンティ（1943ー）です。2026年は新しい「アメリカン・シルバー・イーグル」が発表されてから40周年を迎えます。アメリカ貨幣史を代表する二大デザインを表裏に掲げる当コイン1ドル1オンス「アメリカン・シルバー・イーグル」2010年度版は、その芸術性と実物資産としての無限の将来性によって、近年、地金型コインの代表作としての地位を獲得しつつあります。</p>
