<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">1327年に父エドワード2世が議会によって廃位に追い込まれたことを受けて推戴されたプランタジネット朝の国王エドワード3世。その当時、北方の小国と見られていたイングランドを大国の地位に押し上げ、ヨーロッパにおけるイングランドの権威を確立することに貢献します。即位当初は父王の廃位の原因となった母とその愛人モーティマーの傀儡に過ぎなかったエドワード3世でしたが、次第に自身の立場を認識し、1330年にはクーデターを起こして母を引退させ、モーティマーを処刑に追いやり実権を掌握します。貴族階級と議会を重用し、良好な関係を維持することによって安定的な治世を構築し、英国内の商工業の発展、また軍備の再編成に努めます。中世以降、英国王がフランス国内に所有していたアキテーヌの領地をフランス王が没収したことに端を発するイングランドとフランスの百年戦争が勃発し、対立を深めます。アキテーヌの領地をフランスから奪還したエドワード3世は1340年1月26日以降、フランス王を名乗り始めますが、この慣例はその後数百年もの間、英国王室によって受け継がれます。そして同年よりイングランド王室紋章の盾を4分割して、第1と第3クォーターにフランス王の紋章であるユリの花を模したフルール・ド・リスを描き、第2と第4クォーターにイングランドのライオンを掲げ、英国王の二国での権限を誇示しています。</span></p>\r\n

<h2>エドワード3世の治世最大の功績に数えられる英国の最高勲位であるガーター勲章</h2>\r\n
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">6世紀のイングランドに実在したアーサー王の伝説に強い憧憬を抱いていたエドワード3世は、1348年8月6日にガーター騎士団を創設します。そして騎士団の創設と時を同じくして誕生したのが、その団員章として誕生したガーター勲章でした。同勲章はガーター、頸章、星章、レッサー・ジョージ（肩から掛ける綬を止めるもの）からなり、団員は儀式の際には左足にガーターを装着するのが慣例となっています。創設当日、国王自身と長子のエドワード黒太子が24名の騎士をウィンザー城に招待して騎士団を編成し、城内で円卓を使いて饗宴を催し、「アーサー王と円卓の騎士」の故事に基づいてフランスとの百年戦争への団結心を深めたという出来事を発端とします。最初期のメンバーは国王と黒太子を中心にそれぞれ13名2組に分けられていました。勲章のモットーは「悪意を抱く者に災いあれ」で、自身に敵対する者を排除しようとする王自身の思惑からこの一文が誕生したとも伝えられています。創設から長い年月を経て、外国人君主と女性への授与も行われるようになりますが、恒久的な会員とは別枠での加盟となります。これは18世紀の英国王ジョージ3世がたくさんの王子に恵まれ、臣民への授与を優先した結果、例外に属する者の特別枠での入会を許可したことに由来します。また20世紀以降、敵国君主に授与された同勲章の剥奪や返還を認める制度も生まれますが、これは第一次世界大戦時に新しく制定されたシステムです。大戦で敵国となったドイツの皇帝ヴィルヘルム2世やオーストリア皇帝フランツ・ヨーゼフ1世などが所有した権利の剥奪は、戦争の長期化に伴う国民感情を配慮するジョージ5世の命によって断行されました。それらの国々のうち、ドイツ、オーストリア、イタリアは、戦後、君主制が廃止されたために改めて復権することはありませんでしたが、日本のみは例外で、戦後も皇室が存続した状態でイギリスとの国交が回復したため昭和天皇の騎士団員としての資格が問題視されていた時期があります。昭和天皇がガーター勲章を佩用したのは1929年の皇太子時代のことですが、戦後初の訪英に際して英国政府が昭和天皇のガーター勲爵士の称号の再授与を働きかけ、剥奪された名誉を全て復活させることを宣言しました。</span></p>\r\n

<h2>エドワード3世の栄光の治世を代表するノーブル金貨</h2>\r\n
<p><span style="font-size: 14px;">ノーブル金貨は英国貨幣史上最初に大量発行された法定金貨で、エドワード3世の治世下に初めて導入されました。それらの貨幣はほとんど流通することはなく、ノーブル、ハーフノーブル、そしてクオーターノーブルの3種が発行されていました。今回ご紹介させて頂くノーブル金貨とハーフノーブル金貨の表面には帆船の船上で剣と盾を掲げるエドワード3世が描かれており、在りし日の王の権力を絵画的に描いています。そしてこれら2種のコインの裏面には十字と王冠を組み合わせた複合的な文様が盾を形成し、中央に国王の名前エドワードのイニシャルEがきざまれています。裏面に関しては、これら2種には若干デザイン上の差異はあるものの、基本的には同じデザインを踏襲していることが窺えます。イングランドの優位を示す王冠やライオンの紋章が華麗にちりばめられ、高い装飾性と完成度を誇ります。しかし重量についてはこれら2種のコインには大きな隔たりが見られ、ノーブルが7.7g、そしてハーフノーブルが約3.7gとほぼ2対1となっています。最高度の希少価値を誇るハンマーコインの王者とも言えるノーブル金貨ですが、この時代特有の手工芸的な肌触りは、近世以降のコインには決して見られない独特の魅力と内容を備えており、観るものを圧倒します。ガーター勲章の創設によって英国史に深く名を刻むことになった稀代の帝王エドワード3世の華麗なる治世を投映する2種の金貨が、今、無限に広がる黄金の輝きと共に我々のもとに降誕しました。</span></p>
