<p>2017年に第1弾「イングランドのライオン」のリリースによって華々しく幕を開けた「クイーンズ・ビースト・コレクション」。その後、2021年にはコレクションの最終章として「コンプリ―ター＝完全版」のリリースを以って堂々のクライマックスを迎えるまでの5年間、英国モダンコイン界屈指の人気コインシリーズとして全世界のコインコレクターと投資家を魅了しました。そして2022年に英国ロイヤルミントは、空前の成功を収めた同シリーズの続編として新企画「ロイヤル・テューダー・ビースト・コレクション」を発表し、再び世界を驚嘆させました。前シリーズ「クイーンズ・ビースト・コレクション」と共通の動物も含まれているものの、基本的には15世紀の英国王ヘンリー8世愛顧の10種の動物が取り挙げられていることが当新シリーズ最大の注目点です。ヘンリー8世の在世当時に創建された古い歴史を持つハンプトンコート宮殿のゲート前に架かるモート・ブリッジの欄干には、今もヘンリー8世によって王室の紋章として採用された来歴を持つこれら実在と架空の動物の石像が連立しており、宮殿の来訪者に王室に対する畏敬の念を起こさせることに一役買っています。新コレクションの第1弾「シーモアの豹」はその見事な造形美によって各界から絶賛され、続く第2弾と第3弾への方向性を明確に示唆し、高く評価されました。そしてこの度、待望の第4弾を迎える同シリーズは、「クイーンズ・ビースト・コレクション」において過去にも一度「黒い牛」として取り挙げられた「クラレンスの牛」に再びスポットを当てます。この動物の歴史を紐解きますと、薔薇戦争初期の勝利者として歴史に名を刻む15世紀の英国王エドワード4世（1442－1483）へと繋がります。ランカスター家と対立するヨーク家出身の初の国王として英国王位を我がものとしたエドワード4世は、薔薇戦争たけなわの中世英国史を彩る異色の存在です。王は弟のリチャード3世共々この黒い牛をことのほか愛し、自身の生活空間をその紋章で飾っていたとされています。王の死後、ランカスター家の血族者であるヘンリー7世によってテューダー朝が創設され、この古い牛のシンボルもまた薔薇戦争の終結と共に新王朝にもたらされることになります。テューダー朝の歴代国王の中でもとりわけこの紋章を重視した国王としてヘンリー8世が挙げられます。王はこの動物を10種の動物のシンボルから成る王室コレクションに加えて特別の愛着を示し、英国王室史の遺産として後世に託しました。</p>\r\n

<p>有史以来、人類と生活を共にし、農耕に欠かすことのできない動物であった牛は、全知全能の動物として数多くの文献にも登場し、こと英国人にとっては馬や犬と並んで最も親しみのある動物であることは確かです。15世紀の英国を統一したテューダー家がこの動物の紋章を採用したのはヘンリー7世の時代であり、宿敵ヨーク家出身の国王エドワード4世の娘として生を受けたエリザベス・オブ・ヨークと国王の婚姻関係によってテューダー家にもたらされたことから、その後、英国王室の所有するところのものとなりました。今回ご紹介させていただくコインの裏面には、「クイーンズ・ビースト・コレクション」のデザインとはまた異なった角度からこの動物を捉えたデビッド・ローレンスによる躍動感溢れる現代的な解釈が見られます。牛の胸元には「テューダー・ローズ」の名称で知られる紅白の薔薇から成る古風な紋章が刻まれています。ヘンリー7世によって開かれたテューダー朝の紋章として誕生したこの由緒あるシンボルは、ランカスター家の赤い薔薇とヨーク家の白い薔薇を重ね合わせてデザイン化したものであり、中世英国にて栄華を誇ったこれら二大名家の統合を象徴しています。2022年9月のエリザベス2世の崩御に伴い、新国王として即位したチャールズ3世の治世に受け継がれることになったこの「ロイヤル・テューダー・ビースト・コレクション」ですが、ヘンリー8世ゆかりのこの黒い牛のシンボルが、王の子孫である現国王の治世の始まりを記念するロイヤル・ビーストとしてコイン上にて取り挙げられることは誠に喜ばしいことです。コイン表面にはロイヤルミントの実力派デザイナー、マーティン・ジェニングスによるチャールズ3世の写実性を最大の特徴とする気高い肖像が描かれています。王冠も月桂冠も着用していない国王の自然体の横顔からは、英国王室のあるべき未来像が感じられ好感が持てます。全10種のシンボルによって完結する予定の「ロイヤル・テューダー・ビースト・コレクション」ですが、英国王室600年史を物語る「クラレンスの牛」のリリースによってコレクション全体により歴史的な重厚感が加わり、深い感動を生み出しています。</p>
