<p>ロイヤルミントの主任彫刻師として19世紀前半の英国コイン彫刻界を席巻し、貨幣芸術史上最高の巨星とされるウィリアム・ワイオン（1795～1851）。その類まれなる才能は、1839年にヴィクトリア女王の即位3周年を記念して発行された「ウナとライオン」を筆頭に、数々の創作意欲溢れる名作に遺憾なく発揮され、永遠に語り継がれるに値する確かな実績をこの世に残しました。1817年に発表した「スリーグレーセス」を皮切りに快進撃を続けていたワイオンの有り余る才能と瑞々しい感性は、晩年の総決算である1847年の「ゴチッククラウン」に結実したと見て間違いないでしょう。「スリーグレーセス」のリリースからちょうど30年の時を経て創造されたこの傑作中の傑作は、同時期に英国において隆盛を極めていた中世ゴチック様式のリバイバルの最中に誕生しました。19世紀初頭以降の英国において主流を成していた新古典様式に代わり、ヴィクトリア女王の治世の始まりと共に徐々に広がりを見せていたこの古風ながらも新しい建築芸術様式の潮流は、ワイオンによってコイン界にもたらされ、この感動的な傑作創造の源泉となりました。</p>\r\n

<p>特に注目に値するのはコイン裏面の壮麗豪華なデザインです。イングランドを始めとするイギリス連合王国各国の国章を十字型に配し、その中央には英国の最高勲章であるガーター勲章の徽章が刻まれています。この特徴的な意匠から読み取れることは、いかにゴチック様式がこのデザインを引き立て、前述の新古典様式には決して見られない古色を効果的に醸し出しているかという点です。1847年に初発行されたゴチッククラウンですが、1853年に追加発行されたコインも含めて銀貨が主流であったことはよく知られています。エッジのデザインも大きく分けて3種類が確認されていますが、中でも当コインのような通称「プレーンエッジ」と呼ばれている刻印なしのタイプは高い稀少価値を誇り、コイン・コレクターの間で格別に珍重されています。ゴチック様式ならでは古色蒼然たる風格が生み出すヴィクトリア女王の威圧的なまでの存在感の描出によって、当コインは英国貨幣史上最大の成功を収め、その稀少性により絶対的価値を確立するに至りました。</p>\r\n
